World's Best Airports 2025
By Armaan Dhawan
Skytrax has released their annual list of the world's top airports, with Singapore's Changi International taking the number 1 spot once again. Doha Hamad International, last year's winner, dropped down to second, while Seoul's Incheon International and Tokyo's Haneda International swapped places for the second year in a row.
Changi Intl. is well-known for its world-renowned green space, Jewel Changi. It consists of a massive glass dome with a tropical rainforest inside, similar to the rainforests surrounding the city of Singapore. This space, designed for wellness and full of amenities ranging from an AR dinosaur adventure to a hedge maze, is a unique icon of Singapore in itself, and is what has powered the airport to the top spot so many times-- this year is the airport's 13th time winning the award.
Last year, Doha's addition of the Orchard, its own green space, took them ahead of Changi. The Orchard is a sustainable area with a grid shell glass roof within the main concourse of the airport consisting of a large rainforest and lots of retail with bridges snaking through it all. There is a tropical garden with a water feature as well, and the entire area has a total of 300 trees of 30 different species and 25,000 plants and shrubs of 90 different species. The area is designed to instill peace and tranquility to visitors and allow them to relax, rejuvenate, and recharge while also including over 65 retail and dining experiences.
However, Singapore retook the top spot this year, beating Qatar after an expansion of the airport's Terminal 2. The expansion involved the addition of thousands of new plants and flowing, curved spaces, helping to decrease the feeling of stress in an airport environment. A new area known as "Dreamscape" includes an LED ceiling that replicates outdoor conditions, along with a calming show every 30 minutes, and the acrylic floor with mirrored steel around it gives the feel of walking on water. An advanced speaker system across the terminal also emits tropical sounds typical of Singapore, such as bird songs and insect noises, to give the entire area a natural feel.
Other notable moves this year include Hong Kong International Airport jumping up from 11th to 6th, Rome Fiumicino International coming up from 12th to 8th, and Dubai International dropping from 7th to 11th.
