Contents: Barbie Movie Tops $1 Billion in Global Box Office Typhoon Khanun Strikes Again, Takes Aim At Korean Peninsula Upcoming Events Quote/Word of the Day The Barbie movie has officially topped $1 billion in the global box office, smashing the record for the highest-grossing movie with a female director (Greta Gerwig). It has also surpassed Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 ($845 million) to take the place for second-highest grossing movie of 2023, after The Super Mario Bros. Movie - which made a whopping $1.35 billion in the global box office. It has also shot past the movie that was largely boosted by Barbie- Oppenheimer. The movie, which talks about the creation of the first atomic bomb, still made $500 million, making it the highest-grossing movie ever about World War II. On another note, Typhoon Khanun is still causing a ruckus in the East China Sea, after aiming toward Taiwan and eventually China. However, a change in weather patterns occurred, and the storm doubled back after brushing Taiwan, taking aim once again at Japan's Okinawa prefecture. The islands were hit by Khanun at full force last week, and were hit again a few days later after it came back. It is now turning north and aiming at southern Japan. First, it was expected to fizzle out there. It's not. The typhoon will restrengthen in the Yellow Sea, and then hit South Korea. The coastal city of Busan is expected to take the biggest hit, but other inland cities such as Daegu and Gwangju could also be impacted. The storm will weaken, but it will go on to hit South Korea's capital, Seoul, and move into North Korea and maybe even northeastern China. However, South Korea needs the rain. A heatwave has been keeping the country dry and arid for the past few weeks, and the rain will bring some much-needed relief. It could bring flooding and high winds, though, which is also a threat. Upcoming Events: International Cat Day (Tuesday, August 8) International Day of the World's Indigenous People (Wednesday, August 9) World Lion Day (Thursday, August 10) International Youth Day & World Elephant Day (Saturday, August 12) Quote of the Day: Ideologies separate us. Dreams and anguish bring us together. (Eugene Ionesco) Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster): Debonair- Debonair describes someone who may, by definition, also be called fashionable, attractive, and confident.

Contents: India's Chandrayaan-3 Lander Enters Lunar Orbit Torrential Rain Strikes Slovenia Quote/Word of the Day India's Chandrayaan-3 lander has officially entered the moon's orbit, marking a huge step forward in the process to land on the moon. The lander launched on July 14 for the moon with a lander module and rover, and has arrived in the lunar orbit. They aim to land on the moon to take data, and it is expected to land there on August 23. On another note, at least three people are dead after torrential rain struck Slovenia lately, sparking flash floods and multiple landslides. The damage costs are estimated to be over 500 million euros, and thousands of people have been evacuated as the floods wash away cars and homes. Roads have been destroyed as well, and officials estimate that at least two-thirds of the country has been affected- and most of the country that wasn't hit particularly hard are out of power, because the energy infrastructure also took a big hit. The Slovenian weather service said that the country received a month's worth of rain in a day, and it is taking a large toll on the country's citizens, electrical grid, and other infrastructure. The army is also stepping in to help isolated communities in northern Slovenia, and helicopters and boats are being used to evacuate anyone stranded in the high waters. Quote of the Day: A somebody was once a nobody who wanted to and did. (John Burroughs) Word of the Day: Gumption- Gumption means “courage and confidence,” or in other words, “initiative.”

Today, we have all good news in our daily update today! Enjoy! Contents: Amazon Deforestation Falls By 66% As Brazil Makes Big First Step In Saving Rainforest Flaming Cargo Ship Finally Makes It To Dutch Port Quote/Word of the Day Today, we start off our update with some good news! The deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest has plunged this year, compared to last year. Under Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro's leadership, deforestation increased 10% from July 2021 to July 2022. However, an election took place in late 2022, and president Lula da Silva was inaugurated in January of 2023. Since then, logging has decreased dramatically- 500 square kilometers of land were deforested in July 2023, and 1,487 square kilometers were deforested in July 2022. This is a 66% drop from last year, and Lula aims to keep it that way. Increased surveillance and fines are bringing down the deforestation rates, but more work is needed to bring that rate to zero. This is a great first step though, and hopefully Lula can continue to decrease the logging until it is eliminated. On another note, the flaming ship that was carrying over 3,000 cars has officially reached a port in the Netherlands, and the fire has been extinguished. The ship had been burning for four days when the fire was finally put out, and authorities rushed to get the ship to port due to incoming bad weather. The area it was in is a very ecologically important site, and the damage caused by a sunken ship could have been immense. It has finally reached the port, and salvage work can now begin on the cars aboard. Sadly, one crew member died in the blaze, but everyone else (and the environment) has come out safe and sound. Quote of the Day: Nothing is impossible. The word itself says "I'm possible." (Audrey Hepburn) Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster): Aggrandize- To aggrandize something is to enhance its power, wealth, position, or reputation. Aggrandize can also mean "to increase or enlarge" or "to praise highly."

Contents: Newly Discovered, 39 Million Year-Old Whale Could Be Heaviest Animal to Ever Live 18 Dead After Bus Tumbles Into Ravine In Mexico Quote/Word of the Day Today, we start off with some crazy news from scientists in Peru. They have just uncovered the bones of a new animal that could be the heaviest ever, which they have named Perucetus colossus. The blue whale has long held the title, growing to be up to 100 feet (30.5 meters) long and weigh over 200 tons, but this new discovery could top that. The whale lived about 39 million years ago, according to a paleontologist, and was about 66 feet (20 meters) long, making it shorter than the blue whale. It weighed much more, though- the whale could weigh up to 374 tons! In fact, each vertebra on its backbone weighs over 220 pounds (100 kilograms), and its ribs are approximately 5 feet (1.4 meters) long. The bones are also extremely dense, which suggests that it was a bottom-feeder similar to today's manatees. However, the head is missing from the skeleton, which would have given us the crucial information as to what the animal eats. The scientific community is thrilled at this major discovery and will be looking forward to what else the researchers learn about the colossal whale. On another note, 18 people are dead after a bus tumbled down a steep hillside in Mexico, and about 20 others have been hospitalized. The bus was en route to the US-Mexico border city of Tijuana when the bus flew off the road and into a ravine, which is estimated to be about 40 meters (131 feet) deep. This made rescue extremely complicated, but officials managed to pull it off safely. The bus was carrying 42 passengers from various countries, such as India, Dominican Republic, and multiple African nations. The bus driver has been detained, as he is suspected to have been speeding at the time of the crash. Officials think that he sped around a corner and lost control of the bus, sending it into the ravine. A thorough investigation is still underway, though. Quote of the Day: The beautiful journey of today can only begin when we learn to let go of yesterday. (Steve Maraboli) Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster): Incarcerate- To incarcerate someone is to put them in prison or, figuratively, to subject them to confinement, as in “people incarcerated in their obsessions.”

Contents: Amazon Clinic Reaches All 50 US States Flooding Impacts China As Typhoon Batters Japan's Okinawa Quote/Word of the Day Amazon has officially launched their new 'Amazon Clinic' in all 50 states of the US, which offers telehealth treatment for common conditions, such as cold, flu, urinary tract infection, sinusitis, and pink eye. The service was launched last November but wasn't nationwide until now. It also allows you to have message-based consultations and video chats with your doctor, plus the feature where you can see the cost of your visit beforehand. The launch is part of Amazon's effort to expand in the health sector, after the launch of their 'Amazon Pharmacy' in 2020. On another note, weather has been plaguing Eastern Asia for the past few days, with Typhoon Doksuri battering China and now Typhoon Khanun smashing into Japan's Okinawa prefecture. At least 20 people are dead after 29 inches of rain fell on China's capital, Beijing, in five days, marking China's worst rainfall event in over 140 years. The floods have washed away cars and buildings, while the Chinese province of Fujian recovers from the strong winds and rainfall that Doksuri unleashed on them about a week ago. Meanwhile, at least 30 people are injured after Typhoon Khanun smashing into Okinawa, bringing sustained winds of over 140 mph, storm surge, and severe flooding. It is now weakening and dumping more rain on Taiwan and eastern China, and will eventually fizzle out in the East China Sea. Quote of the Day: It always seems impossible until it is done. (Nelson Mandela) Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster): Contiguous- Contiguous is a formal word used to describe things that touch each other or are immediately next to each other in time or sequence.

Contents: Sturgeon Supermoon Lights Up Skies Around the World Numerous Car Incidents Cause Recall Announcements from Ford, Dodge, Ram, and Subaru AMC Experiences Their Best Week Ever Due to "Barbieheimer" Craze Quote/Word of the Day Last night, a sturgeon supermoon lit up the night sky, brightening the night for much of the world. A sturgeon moon is the term coined for the full moon in August, and supermoons take place when the moon appears full when it is at its closest point to Earth, which only happens three or four times a year. On another note, if you own a Ford F-150 pickup truck made between 2021 and 2023 with a single-pipe exhaust system, a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500, a 2000-2006 BMW, a 2019-2022 Ram 1500, 2500, or 3500, or a Subaru Ascent made between 2019 and 2022, this could mean trouble for you. First off, Ford has just discovered a problem where the electronic parking brake could fail at any given moment, including while in motion. This could cause serious crashes, as the car's brake could give out when trying to stop the car. The recall applies to about 870,000 trucks, and there have been about 300 occasions where the parking brake has failed, 19 of which were in motion. For the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 and the 17-22 year old BMWs, the airbags could have an issue. A recall has been announced for these cars for quite a while now, so if you haven't gotten the car checked yet then this a reminder; it is a serious issue, as over 67 million airbags have experienced this issue. The first passenger side Takata airbag could be defective in the Dodge Ram 1500, so long-term exposure to heat and humidity can cause the air bags to explode violently, leading to severe injuries and even death. In the BMWs, the airbags are extremely old and could violently explode due to the same issue, but any airbag in the car could experience the defect. Any Ram 1500, 2500, or 3500 made between 2019 and 2022 could have a defect in the tailgate latch. Due to "misaligned tailgate strikers," the tailgate could open at any time- even while driving. This recall was announced about 8 months ago, so this is also a reminder to get it checked; over 1.2 million trucks have had a tailgate latch defect. Also, over 270,000 Subaru Ascents are suspected to have a problem where the ground terminal could melt due to "improperly fastened ground bolts," causing the car to have a high risk of catching fire. Subaru suggests taking it to a dealer to be checked on as soon as possible- in the meantime, park the car away from structures and do not leave it unattended while the car is running. Lastly, AMC Theaters just experienced their best week (in terms of revenue) since the company's founding in 1920, due to the "Barbieheimer" craze striking the world. Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" has made over $800 million globally, and over $155 million in the box office on its opening weekend. "Oppenheimer," on the other hand, made over $80.5 million on its opening weekend and has made over $400 million globally. Combined, the movies have made over $1.2 billion worldwide, making them the largest box office hit in 2023. Barbie is currently the third highest-grossing movie in 2023, and it will soon surpass Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3, which made $845 million in the global box office. However, it still has some way to go before taking the top spot, which is held by "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." It made over $1.35 billion worldwide! Quote of the Day (BrainyQuote): A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows. (Francis of Assisi) Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster): Perquisite- Perquisite refers to something extra that someone receives in addition to regular pay for doing a job. Perks, as in “job perks” is short for perquisite.

Quote/Word of the Day Multiple typhoons are heading toward the likes of many Asian countries, and could deliver heavy rain and strong winds in the coming days. A weak hurricane has formed in the Bay of Bengal, currently named Hurricane Four, which is expected to hit Bangladesh and India in a few days. The hurricane just formed on Monday morning, and is already dumping rain over western Myanmar and eastern India- especially the state of Odisha and some of Chhattisgarh. The storm currently has sustained winds of about 45 mph, and is expected to stay at that strength before hitting Bangladesh and eventually the states of West Bengal and Jharkhand in India. Kolkata is going to take the brunt of the hit, as it is directly in the hurricane's path. Meanwhile, Typhoon Khanun has been strengthening in the West Pacific after forming on Thursday, and has sustained winds of over 140 mph. The storm is now taking aim at Japan's Okinawa prefecture, which is right in the path of the destructive storm. Khanun will smash into Okinawa later today, with damaging winds, storm surge, and heavy rain. Flooding is a huge concern, but the winds will also be a problem. Then, the typhoon will brush past northern Taiwan and eastern China, turn back, and take aim at Japan's southern islands- but the typhoon will be much weaker. Thankfully, China will not take too much of a hit, after the monster Typhoon Doksuri smashed into China's Fujian province with winds of 145 mph and heavy rain. Floods are still plaguing the area as rain continues, but the winds have finally let up. However, this time Japan will take a hit, and Khanun will definitely deliver some serious damage to Okinawa. Supporters of a political leader had gathered in the town of Khar in the Bajaur district when a "suicide attack" ripped through the rally and caused massive damage to the area while killing 55 people and wounding numerous others. Many of the people who are injured are in critical condition, and some officials expect the death toll to rise as nearby hospitals are swarmed with patients and victims of the blast. Today, we have some 'fiery' news for you! Let's dive in. Contents: Burning Dutch Ship Starting Towing Process Massive Fireworks Explosion Kills 10 in Thailand Tour de France: Who Won? Quote/Word of the Day The burning cargo ship off of the coast of the Netherlands is still ablaze after five days of efforts to put the fire out, so authorities are finally starting to tow the ship. One firefighter has been killed amongst the all-Indian crew, and conditions are still quite dangerous aboard the ship. It is carrying over 500 new electric vehicles and about 3,000 various other new cars (such as hybrid, gasoline, and diesel-powered vehicles), but the prime suspect for the cause of the fire is an EV. The ship is specifically carrying Mercedes-Benz and BMW electric cars, which seem to be what ignited the blaze, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Tugboats could be seen controlling the area in past days as they redirected other ships around the burning one, but the towing process is finally starting as officials have deemed the boat safe enough to be towed. The process was delayed by several days after winds caused the fire to become worse, and firefighters had to limit their water usage to put out the fire; if the cargo ship became full of water, it would quickly sink. Officials are extremely worried of an environmental disaster if it sinks, because gasoline and diesel would leak into the ocean, car parts and batteries could release harmful chemicals, and the ship's fuel could also spill into a zone that is very ecologically sensitive. Now that the winds have calmed and the fire has died down, authorities have commenced the 12-hour procedure to bring the flaming ship to shore. On another note, a massive explosion at a fireworks facility in Thailand killed 10 people and injured at least 100 others on Saturday, after sparks supposedly caused a deadly chain reaction. The spark is suspected to have come from a welder doing construction work inside the warehouse, and ignited the fireworks inside the warehouse. The explosion caused severe damage to anything within a 1,640-foot radius, damaging over 500 homes and reducing the warehouse itself to splinters. Clouds of smoke were seen billowing into the sky at the scene, and streets were covered with rubble as the blast destroyed houses, vehicles, roads, and various other buildings. Lastly, Sunday was the last day of Tour de France, the famous bike race! To figure out the winner (and some more information/stats), check out this article by Mihir Gupta! Quote of the Day (BrainyQuote): This is the precept by which I have lived: Prepare for the worst; expect the best; and take what comes. (Hannah Arendt) Word of the Day: Saudade- A deep emotional state of melancholic longing for a person or thing that is absent.
