Two people are dead and five others were injured after a shooting at Florida State University yesterday, and a thorough investigation into the incident is now taking place.
The gunman entered the FSU grounds in possession of a handgun and a shotgun before opening fire near the student union, where students meet for meetings and social events, at around 11:50 am. Student reports stated that he arrived on campus in an orange Hummer before opening fire, using different weapons, including a rifle and a pistol. He hit several people before he was taken down by FSU police, but he is still alive and has been hospitalized with injuries that have not been described in detail.
The suspect was later confirmed to be 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, the son of the sheriff's deputy. The weapons that he had used were owned by his mother, which came at no surprise to police. They believe that he was a student at the university, but that has not been confirmed, and his motive also remains unknown.
The gunman's mother, Jessica Ikner, was a loyal member of the police force, serving at the sheriff's department for over 18 years. Additionally, her son had been a consistent member of the Youth Advisory Council, a council that aims to communicate between the local youth and the sheriff's office, and had also trained with police in the past. Phoenix Ikner was also confirmed to be a hardcore Republican, and some of the people who knew him described his views as similar to those of a white supremacist.
All of these elements have made the story more confusing for the police to detangle, but a thorough investigation to discover how and why the incident occurred is underway.
