Welcome to today’s daily update for Wednesday, October 7, 2026. Here’s everything you need to know.
The Breakdown
French authorities have been forced to shut down more than 900 schools and arrest thousands of people as massive protests against the nation’s school system take place across France.
The protests began at a single high school in the Paris metropolitan area, advocating for upgraded facilities, better teachers, and more funding for extracurriculars and school programs.
The walkouts spread like wildfire, drawing parents and students from high schools across the nation. More than 266,000 people took part in yesterday’s demonstrations, with 56,000 protesting in Paris alone. The marches have remained relatively peaceful, but thousands of people have been detained by police officers amid clashes between authorities and protesters.
In several areas, including Paris, officers have utilized tear gas, rubber bullets, and other riot gear to suppress the protests – a move that has been heavily criticized by parents whose teenagers are taking part. One 15-year-old boy lost his hand on Monday after being hit by a stun grenade, sparking outrage over unnecessary violence being used against minors.
However, the French government has backed up police by confirming that riots had, in fact, become violent in several areas. At least 715 officers have been injured, and more than 6,500 protesters have been arrested, many of whom are teenagers. Staff and students at various high schools have also been injured in the demonstrations, alongside extensive damage to school property. Multiple high schools were looted by students, and several even caught fire.
The Global Snapshot
Bulgaria has launched an investigation after two commercial vessels in the Black Sea were attacked by drones yesterday. Ukraine has placed the blame on Russia, which would trigger even more unstable geopolitical tensions in eastern Europe, but authorities are still working to determine the true origin of the drones. The strike took place at around 3 am inside Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), which signifies that Bulgaria holds claim to those waters and the resources within them. One of the vessels experienced severe damage and sunk immediately, while the other caught fire but remained floating. A ferry sailed near the wreck and rescued all 18 sailors, two of whom were in critical condition and were airlifted to a nearby hospital.
Further details regarding last week’s flydubai incident have emerged, and officials are uncovering more about the Omani co-pilot’s intentions and motive. According to the latest investigation, the co-pilot – confirmed to be Hammam al-Hammami – had planned an attack on Israel’s Tel Aviv that would have been similar to the September 11 attacks of 2001. He was discovered spreading extremist Islamic propaganda during his tenure at Oman Air, leading to his firing, but these concerns were not communicated across airlines. Following the pandemic, when al-Hammami was hired by flydubai during a period of intense recruitment and expansion, he was screened criminally but not for signs of radicalization. Therefore, he used their haste in accepting applicants to get himself placed on a sensitive route to Israel in order to execute his plan.
