The Breakdown
Authorities have discovered more after the shocking cockpit attack aboard flydubai FZ1073 on Wednesday.
The flight, which serves as the only nonstop route between the United Arab Emirates and Israel amid the ongoing Iran conflict, was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv-Yafo when the plane’s co-pilot attacked the pilot in a brutal assault. The co-pilot attempted to hijack the aircraft, purposely jamming the controls to attempt to force a crash.
Further investigations have discovered that the co-pilot did not, in fact, have a pocketknife as initially expected – he appears to have used the crash axe in the cockpit. A crash axe is a special, compact emergency tool kept onboard to help in rescue and firefighting operations.
During this tussle, the flight descended more than 17,000 feet in two minutes, dropping more than 14,000 feet in a 30-second window at a staggering speed of around 28,000 feet per minute.
As the pilot, Captain Smit Machchhar, fought back, he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to intervene. Passenger Yaniv Hayun quickly placed the co-pilot in a chokehold while several others tied him up using the flight’s headphone cables. Meanwhile, a doctor onboard tended to the pilot, who had been hit numerous times, and an off-duty pair of pilots took control of the aircraft and successfully made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia despite severe damage to the rudder after the sharp plunge.
The pilot was stabilized in a local Saudi Arabian hospital and has been transferred to Abu Dhabi alongside the co-pilot, who has been shifted into UAE custody and identified as an unnamed Omani national.
The co-pilot’s motive is still unclear, though. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has attributed the attack to “Islamist radical indoctrination,” while US President Donald Trump has suggested that Iran could be behind the incident. Investigators and flydubai have urged citizens not to jump to conclusions while a thorough investigation is completed in the UAE.
The Global Snapshot
Significant demonstrations are taking place across French high schools, forcing schools to shut down as students protest against the nation’s education system. The teenagers are advocating for better teachers and upgraded facilities, which they argue that many high schools lack, alongside less overcrowded classes and less demanding schedules. More than 160 high schools were forced to shut down due to the protests, and over 3,000 students have been detained by authorities. Over 300 police officers have been injured, particularly due to students throwing rocks and other projectiles, and one school saw extensive fire damage in one corner due to an arson attempt. One teenager argued that they were simply protesting “against this government that doesn’t invest in heating, air conditioning, or teachers’ salaries.”
Brazilian President Lula Inácio de Silva is barely leading Flávio Bolsonaro in presidential polls ahead of the nation’s upcoming elections, raising concerns over the future of the Amazon rainforest. Lula, a left-wing advocate for the protection of the Amazon, is Brazil’s incumbent president. Under his leadership, the nation has implemented several social welfare programs while cutting down deforestation by more than 50%. Flávio Bolsonaro, on the other hand, is the son of Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s highly conservative former president who encouraged Amazon deforestation and was later convicted of plotting a coup to overthrow Lula’s government. Bolsonaro is likely to follow a similar path as his father, and the election is still close – Lula is barely leading in polls, just 45% to 42%.
