The Breakdown
Meta will pay a staggering $18 billion to US states as part of a settlement in a massive lawsuit regarding child safety online.
The prosecutors – which consisted of 47 states, the District of Columbia, and multiple territories – alleged that Meta had violated child safety laws by designing their products to addict children. Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become centers for cyberbullying and harmful content – when combined with addiction, usage directly correlates with mental health problems, which can be severe.
Studies have found that heavy social media use doubles the risk of depression and anxiety, and while 22% of teens point to social media as the main factor that negatively affects their well-being, more than 95% of children between the ages of 13 and 17 use social media in some capacity.
However, Meta agreed to settle the massive lawsuit, leading to significant product changes and some major costs.
Some of the most important results of the settlement are the direct structural changes that Meta will implement across Facebook and Instagram. All accounts for users under the age of 18 will be capped at a two-hour time limit, preventing teen addiction, and the apps will cease to operate for these users between the nighttime hours of midnight and 6 am. During the school day, between 8 am and 3 pm, notifications will be completely blocked for teen users, preventing distractions.
Additionally, Meta will hide likes and comments from teenage users’ posts, preventing them from chasing popularity or receiving insults and harmful responses on their content. Extreme makeup and some body distortion filters will also be blocked – currently, 46% of teens who use social media say it makes them feel worse about their body image.
Financially, Meta will pay $12.1 billion into settlement funds across various states and territories across the next 10 years, but the remaining $5 billion is conditional. This remaining money will only be paid by Meta if rival platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Snapchat are forced to implement similar product changes – essentially, Meta has thrown its competitors under the bus, ensuring that prosecutors go after other platforms.
According to Meta, this clause was necessary for them to keep business while also protecting users – if teenagers faced a time limit on Instagram, they could simply switch over to another social media application, losing massive amounts of revenue for Meta while eliminating the positive impacts of the settlement.
The remaining money is an additional fine of hundreds of millions of dollars aiming to resolve outstanding issues from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, a massive data privacy breach in 2013 where Facebook illegally harvested the data of more than 87 million people.
These settlement funds will use the money to support youth mental health initiatives and online safety programs, aiming to prevent further social media-induced health problems for children and teens.

The death toll in the devastating Nepal-China floods has risen to at least 390, and more than 1,400 people remain missing. Many of those affected by the disaster were pilgrims making their way to or returning from Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, two highly sacred sites in the Himalayas. 826 people have been reported missing in Nepal, over 500 of which were foreigners, while another 558 people are missing on the Chinese side of the border. Rescue teams are currently working to search for survivors and bodies, but the operation is tough – the flood caked almost everything in a thick layer of gray mud, camouflaging anything underneath.
Yesterday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order officially changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. The president confirmed that it was a direct response to a “difficult” and “entitled” Canada amid a growing trade war, but Canadian officials overwhelmingly rejected the move. Several Democrats also criticized Trump’s move, arguing that international conflicts continue to persist, economic tensions remain tense, and Trump insists on geographic posturing during this time. Some waved away the name change as an attempt to distract the public from real issues like inflation and rising prices. However, the name change did draw a significant amount of mockery and satire online, where people compared it to the newly-named Gulf of America and joked about whether the Atlantic or Pacific could be next.
