The Breakdown
A massive flood swept down a Himalayan valley yesterday morning, crashing through the China-Nepal border before emerging into a populated area.
Before we launch into the breakdown, watch a quick, one-minute video of the flood below. People can be seen sprinting away from the scene around 30 seconds before the water approaches, but once it arrives, the only thing left is devastation.
According to initial reports, the flood was caused by a glacial collapse near the beginning of the valley, located in the Tibet’s Gyirong County. After days of above-average temperatures, a gigantic chunk of ice broke off of a glacier at an altitude of around 17,000 feet – plunging more than a kilometer into the valley below. The sheer force of this drop instantly pulverized the ice, turning it into water.
Furthermore, as the ice exploded on impact, the remaining pieces blocked the Lhende River, which travels down the valley. This brief blockage led to water buildup behind the spot of the glacial collapse, creating a massive wall of water when the pressure broke through.
From there, the water built up speed as it rushed down the valley, picking up debris and destroying everything in its path. There was minimal warning and no way for those in its path to escape – with mountains on both sides, water behind, and valley ahead, those on the border had very little chance of surviving such a disaster.
Towards the end of the valley, several other rivers break away from the Trishuli River – the Lhende River on the Nepali side – before the area flattens out into a heavily-populated region. Most of the devastation took place in this area, as the water emerged at the end of the valley.
By the end, floodwaters covered everything. Entire villages had been wiped out, buried underneath several feet of mud. 19 bridges were destroyed, alongside more than 25 miles of roads. Hydropower projects inside the valley suffered severe damage, and checkpoint infrastructure – as shown in the video above – was also wiped out.
At least 332 people have been confirmed dead, and more than 900 more remain missing in Nepal. Unfortunately, many of those missing are foreign nationals – the valley is a highly common destination for those looking to make the trek to sacred sites in Tibet like Mount Kailash or Lake Mansarovar. That includes hundreds of Indians and dozens of Americans, Australians, and British nationals.
Meanwhile, on the Chinese side, more than 500 people remain missing, and several people have been confirmed dead.
Rescue teams have deployed boats and helicopters to help search for survivors, but the floodwaters have made them extremely difficult to find. Debris has also clogged several major rivers, raising fears that secondary floods could take place within the next day.

Meta has agreed to pay a staggering $18 billion to settle several lawsuits from US states, with prosecutors alleging that Meta designed products like Facebook and Instagram to addict children. Meta has denied all wrongdoing, but they have agreed to resolve the cases. As part of the settlement, the company will implement a daily time limit of two hours on Meta applications for teenagers, alongside a complete ban between midnight and 6 am. The apps will also enter a school mode between 8 am and 3 pm, which will see reduced notifications and less activity, among other changes. Financially, the corporation will pay 70% of the money into a settlement fund over the next decade, while the remaining 30% will only be paid if TikTok and YouTube implement similar restrictions. Essentially, the additional clause throws Meta’s competitors under the bus, ensuring that prosecutors attempt to force restrictions upon other platforms – if teenagers faced a time limit on Instagram, they could simply switch over to another social media application, losing massive amounts of revenue for Meta. AI giant Nvidia released their quarterly earnings report yesterday afternoon, blasting past investor expectations yet again. Wall Street estimated revenue of around $92.17 billion, but Nvidia posted quarterly revenue of $96.2 billion, in addition to doubling their net income from one year ago. The company also forecasts more than 70% growth for the upcoming fiscal year, cooling fears of a growing AI bubble and increasing circular spending within the industry. Nvidia remains at the core of a booming artificial intelligence industry, with business fueled by the corporation’s latest Vera Rubin technology and Blackwell infrastructure. Growth is not expected to slow down any time soon, and investors were happy to hear of Nvidia’s recent success – the stock jumped more than 4% in after-hours trading on Wednesday.
