The Breakdown
The Brazilian presidential election is still too close to call. It is heading to a runoff in late October, and the future of the Amazon may be at stake.
Incumbent President Lula Inácio da Silva is the first of the candidates, having already served three presidential terms. He won two consecutive terms in 2002 and 2006 before facing several health issues between 2010 and 2014. In 2017, he was convicted of corruption and money laundering by authorities, who claimed that he had taken part in the Petrobras scandal – the scandal saw the Brazilian state-owned oil giant offer more than $2 billion in kickbacks to executives at the company alongside government employees.
Lula maintained that he had played no role in the scheme and had been targeted by his opposition, but he gave in to authorities and served 580 days in jail. He attempted to run for the 2018 election while in prison and even led initial polls, but Brazilian courts barred his candidacy, allowing right-wing leader Jair Bolsonaro to win the presidency.
In 2022, Lula won the presidential election again. Since then, he has been praised heavily for his environmental stewardship and protection of the Amazon rainforest, where deforestation rates have dropped by more than 50%. He has also reformed taxes and expanded social welfare programs, benefiting the lower and middle class. However, government spending and crime rates have significantly increased under his presidency, raising financial and safety concerns among citizens.
Meanwhile, Flavio Bolsonaro, Lula’s competitor, plans to adopt many of the same policies as his father. Under Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s oil and agricultural industries boomed, and his presidency saw major cuts to government spending and drops in crime. However, his success came at the expense of the Amazon, which saw its highest deforestation rates in more than 15 years as his administration encouraged the spread of ranching into the rainforest.
The senior Bolsonaro was also convicted in 2025 of staging a coup against the Brazilian government, leading to a sentence of more than 27 years.
Currently, the polls are tight, with Flávio Bolsonaro leading Lula da Silva by a matter of percentage points. Bolsonaro currently has 47.03% of the vote, while Lula has 45.16%. Neither candidate succeeded in obtaining the 50% majority required to win, meaning that the election race will head to a runoff on October 25 to truly decide who will lead the country for the next four years.
The Global Snapshot
The US is scrambling to withdraw B-1 bombers from an airbase in the United Kingdom after renewed threats of terrorist attacks on the base – RAF Fairford in southern England. Last week, five men were arrested for driving towards the base in three white vans, planning to execute a suspected terror plot. The men were released on bail but remain under investigation. Now, the US is attempting to return all 12 B-1 bombers at the location to their home base in South Dakota, but citizens remain unsure as to why this action is being taken so quickly. The US has affirmed that the suspected terrorist attacks are Iran-backed, but they have not provided further details.
The co-pilot in the shocking flydubai incident from several days ago has been identified as Omani national Hammam al-Hammami, according to authorities. He had already been banned from flying for Oman Air due to his extremist ideologies, and he made multiple trips to Syria to visit family – the latter, in particular, have come under intense scrutiny and are currently being investigated to examine whether he may have met with leaders of ISIS or other Islamic terrorist groups operating in the region. It is still unclear exactly how the co-pilot was even hired after being rejected by Oman Air and how flydubai allowed him into the cockpit of an aircraft despite maintaining extremist views.
