Zverev and Andreeva Emerge Victorious in French Open Finals
Your Daily Update for June 8, 2026. Plus: Germany's Alexander Zverev and Russia's Mirra Andreeva emerged victorious through the men's and women's finals of a surprise-ridden 2026 French Open.
In the men’s tournament, various stars – including 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner – were instantly launched into discussion after the withdrawal of Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
Media reports confirmed that Alcaraz would not participate in the tournament due to concerns over the condition of his wrist, where he had sustained an injury during the first round of the Barcelona Open in April. Due to the nature of the injury, Alcaraz and his team decided to sideline him until June, which would prevent him from taking part in the French Open – a competition that the star player won in 2024 and, most notably, in 2025 after a record-breaking final against Sinner.
Sinner and Zverev were widely regarded as the most likely prospects to take the title, with Djokovic also in the mix. However, those odds dramatically changed within the first few days, with Sinner suffering a shocking five-set defeat to Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round after intense heat and cramping. The following day, Djokovic was also eliminated after a third-round loss to Joao Fonseca, leaving Zverev, Canada’s No. 4 Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Italy’s No. 10 Flavio Cobolli as the remaining favorites.
Days later, Cobolli defeated Auger-Aliassime in a four-set quarterfinal, and another win in the semifinals pitted him against Zverev for the final match. The thrilling final match featured strong play from both sides, with the lead pivoting between both competitors. Zverev won the first set 6-1, but Cobolli won the next 6-4. In the third set, Zverev took the lead again, winning 6-4, but the fourth set came down to a nail-biting tiebreaker. Nevertheless, Cobolli remained in the fight, and squeezed out a 7-6 (5) win to take the match to a fifth set. However, Zverev was able to outlast him in the physical battle – Cobolli suffered from cramping and exhaustion after the intense tiebreaker, allowing Zverev to take over the fifth set 6-1.
The win sealed Zverev’s long-awaited, first-ever Grand Slam trophy and solidified his status as the world No. 3 in men’s tennis. Zverev maintains a long history with the French Open – in 2022, he twisted his ankle against Nadal in the semifinals, and he lost a two-set lead in the 2024 finals, allowing Alcaraz to take the win. After the win, the German could be seen crying on the court as he processed the emotional gravity of the feat.
Meanwhile, on the women’s side of the tournament, a similar procession of surprise exits took place throughout the French Open. Elena Rybakina, the world No. 2 in women’s tennis, was eliminated in the second round after losing an intense, three-set match against Yuliia Starodubtseva. Coco Gauff, last year’s winner, lost an intense, three-set match to Austria’s Anastasia Potapova in the third round, and four-time French Open winner Iga Świątek was eliminated in the fourth round after losing to Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 7-5, 6-1.
The most shocking defeat came in the quarterfinals, when world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka – widely regarded as the favorite to win the tournament – was defeated by Diana Shnaider, with Sabalenka losing the third and final set 6-0.
After a series of semifinals, world No. 114 Maja Chwalinska – whose best performance in a Grand Slam had been reaching the second round at Wimbledon in 2022 – emerged as one of the competitors for the title. However, Russia’s Mirra Andreeva, the world No. 8, defeated her in a two-set victory 6-3, 6-2, sealing the 19-year-old’s first Grand Slam title. Nevertheless, Chwalinska’s career-best performance sent her soaring up the rankings, reaching No. 21 after the tournament.
