The number of acres burned across Spain alone in 2026 – that’s 0.4% of the entire country’s territory. On average, wildfires burn around 235,000 acres in Spain each year, meaning that this season is already more than double what the nation usually faces.
Spain’s most recent record for the most fires burned across one year was set in 2022, when a variety of large blazes scorched more than 1 million acres.
How many people have been evacuated from Spain’s Ávila fire, which is officially the nation’s largest-ever wildfire. The blaze has already burned through more than 123,500 acres of land and continues to sweep through the forests west of Madrid. Firefighters have confirmed that their largest priority is now the people, not the fire – it is moving so quickly that new evacuations are being ordered every day or two.
How many acres have been burned by wildfires across France in 2026. The nation loses just 36,000 acres to fires every year – this year’s totals are already more than six times that average number, and the entire month of August is still left to face. The majority of these wildfires have been concentrated in the country’s southwestern departments of Gironde and Landes.
Meanwhile, Portugal and Greece – two of the most fire-prone nations in Europe – are enjoying below-average wildfire seasons. Portugal sees around 1.15% of its territory burned by wildfires – more than 260,000 acres – each year, but the nation has just seen 92,000 acres burned in 2026. A similar trend has occurred in Greece, where 10,500 acres have burned in 2026 against an annual average of 123,500 acres.
However, some experts believe that a warm end to the summer could bring those numbers higher before temperatures begin to cool in September.
How many firefighters are currently battling the Gironde fire in southwestern France. Sadly, two firefighters were killed after a sudden change in winds engulfed them in the blaze, and at least 75 firefighters have been injured. Thousands of military personnel and 18 aircraft are also participating in the operation to control the dangerous fire.
More than 104,000 acres have been burned – an area four times the size of Paris – and at least 220,000 evacuations have been ordered. The move is France’s largest evacuation since World War II, and the fire is the nation’s largest on record.
The fire is currently stable, but rising temperatures and strong winds have made it incredibly volatile. The edges of the blaze are just 9 miles away from the city of Bordeaux, home to more than 1.3 million people, and 240 homes and businesses have already been destroyed by the inferno.
In fact, the fire has grown so intense that it has generated its own storm clouds, known as pyrocumulonimbus clouds. These clouds can generate their own fronts and wind currents, fueling the blaze in unprecedented directions across different areas.
The projected temperature in Córdoba, a town in southern Spain, this weekend (44°C). Temperatures across Spain and France will soar in the upcoming days, particularly in inland areas that lack access to a water body to regulate their temperature. Seville, Toledo, and Zaragoza will hit 108°F (42°C), while the Madrid metropolitan area will remain above 100°F (38°C) for the next few days.
Meanwhile, France is forecast for a cooldown, with much of western and central France receiving some relief from the blazing temperatures. More favorable conditions could allow firefighters to make some progress on the Gironde fire, but those in Spain will receive no such assistance from the weather.
This comes after the region’s hottest June on record, and conditions will only worsen in the coming years as global warming takes hold of the world’s climate. Wildfires and extreme heat are becoming more and more common, and heat waves are now the norm across European summers.

The death toll in yesterday’s devastating earthquake in southern Japan has risen to at least 18, and officials expect the number to further rise as crews work to uncover the bodies of victims. The quake struck on Tuesday afternoon, damaging homes, businesses, and roadways, and aftershocks continued through yesterday. Over 300,000 people have been evacuated, and evacuees are not being allowed to return home yet as the situation unfolds.
After US President Donald Trump ceased all strikes on Iran, the Middle Eastern nation has responded with more attacks. Iran launched strikes towards a US command center and military base in Jordan, along with attacks on three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. All of the strikes on the base were intercepted, and Saudi Arabia and the US have launched joint strikes on Iran’s proxy forces in Iraq. Trump later proclaimed that Iran would “receive a beating,” as part of a colorfully-worded speech that displayed the president’s anger over the situation.

The fires threatening Bordeaux and the rest of France are not an isolated emergency-they are an harbinger of the deepening interdependence of climate change, land management, urban expansion, and disaster preparedness. When a country’s leaders frame an incident as “the most difficult the country has had in decades,” it speaks to the escalating complexity of managing extreme weather, not simply a single wildfire.
The urgent crisis at hand is managing the current wildfire during conditions so hot, dry, and windy that flames travel with an uncontainable speed. But the underlying, strategic crisis is that extended heatwaves, prolonged droughts, and altered weather patterns are creating a protracted wildfire season in many corners of the globe. Efforts to manage Forests-such as managed burns when warranted, fuel management, build fire breaks, and restore ecosystems-must combine with climate-adapted land-use planning. It will take a whole community response of the highest order to prepare for a worst-case-scenario where communities invest in resilient infrastructure, public warning and communication systems, and evacuation protocols.
Wildfires are now fundamentally more than environmental a phenomenon-theyarea national security,public health,economic, and technological problem. Those countries investing now in climate adaptation efforts, advanced sensing tools, resilient structures, and broad scientific partnerships will find themselves most resilient to the inevitable challenges tocome and most capable of protecting the land, its people and its future generations.
