The Breakdown
Indonesia is suffering through simultaneous natural disasters as wildfires plague the archipelago’s biodiverse rainforests and the volcano of Anak Krakatau erupts violently in the Sunda Strait.
Unfortunately, due to the El Niño weather patterns taking place across the globe, Indonesia is experiencing an extremely above-average wildfire season. El Niño years see warmer temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, which trigger warm and dry conditions across Southeast Asia. This year, a Super El Niño is setting in, which is further exacerbating these effects to become one of the most severe on record.
Indonesia is home to 36% of the world’s tropical peatlands, a highly biodiverse wetland ecosystem that stores massive amounts of carbon and supports thousands of species. However, these peatlands are also highly vulnerable to wildfires, which can smolder underground for months even if the weather above is cool and wet.
Additionally, when peat burns, it produces highly acrid, dark smoke that spreads over a large area – according to NASA, peat fires generate three times more fine particulate matter, five times more sulfur dioxide, three times more organic carbon, and two times more methane and carbon monoxide than regular tropical forest fires.
Now, a thick layer of haze has covered southeastern Asia, spreading over Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and much of Indonesia. Fires are burning across the islands of Sumatra and Borneo – some of the most biodiverse places on Earth – and respiratory illnesses are surging in major cities like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur as skies turn gray with toxic smoke. Some areas have not seen blue sky for as long as a month, permanently shrouded in a thick, acrid haze.
The situation is the region’s worst since 2015, when another Super El Niño triggered sweeping fires across Indonesia that produced similar amounts of toxic smoke and burned through thousands of acres of peatlands.
Meanwhile, the recent eruption of Anak Krakatau is not helping with local air quality. Greater Jakarta and parts of Sumatra are now seeing air quality levels drop further after the volcano eruption, which saw ash fly more than 50,000 feet into the air. Hundreds of flights were canceled, and thousands of travelers have been left stranded at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport amid the situation.
Located west of the island of Java – Indonesia’s most populous – in the Sunda Strait, Anak Krakatau means “Child of Krakatau.” The volcano is a young stratovolcano that rose from the crater of Krakatau, a volcano infamous for its 1883 eruption that was heard as far as 3,000 miles away.
The eruption has come to an end after spewing lava for more than 25 hours, but the ash and smoke released during the explosive event will linger in the region for several days.
The Global Snapshot
Five people were killed and dozens of others were injured after an Amazon cargo plane overshot a runway at Miami International Airport, careening into various vehicles and bursting into flames. The plane was confirmed to be a Boeing 767, and the National Transportation Security Board (NTSB) is already investigating to find whether the accident was due to a fault in the aircraft or human error. In the meantime, Miami International Airport is experiencing severe delays and cancelations, and three people are still in critical condition at a local hospital.
At least 25 people are dead after a bus crashed in a mountainous area on Cape Verde’s Fogo Island, according to local authorities. Not much information has been released, but police have confirmed that the accident occurred along the Campanas de Cima route, and most of those onboard were teenagers. The cause of the incident has not been determined, but an investigation into the crash has been launched.
Alternative for Germany, the leading far-right party in the Central European nation, has just won their first state in the group’s history. However, the AfD fell just short of achieving a complete majority in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, meaning that they will need to either form a coalition with another party or force another round of elections to attempt to win a majority. The incumbent Christian Democrats have established a deal with all other major German parties to shut out the AfD because of their extremely conservative policies, meaning that they will likely be unable to form a coalition to govern the state.
