The Breakdown
The United Nations is meeting at their New York City headquarters for the annual General Assembly, aiming to address several major issues that are facing the world right now.
Founded in 1945 after the end of World War II, the United Nations has stood for more than 81 years as a beacon of international cooperation and collaboration – despite their inability to pass binding legislation, different branches of the UN have facilitated aid distribution, fought back against injustice, and secured stability across the globe.
However, the UN now faces one of its toughest challenges yet, with the looming threat of AI alongside existing issues like climate change. Concerns that artificial intelligence could “go rogue” in the near future are increasing, particularly after a string of breakouts regarding OpenAI’s latest GPT models and Google’s Gemini.
Meanwhile, the world has just passed the 1.5°C warming threshold set by the Paris Agreement, meaning that catastrophic heating and global warming is now irreversible and will require rapid, coordinated action to prevent a runaway greenhouse effect from kicking in. Natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires are ravaging more and more land every year, particularly in developing countries that contribute much less to the climate change being induced by wealthy nations.
Conflicts are also endangering global safety – wars in Iran, Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and Myanmar have persisted across the last few years, driven by regional, ethnic, and religious tensions.
Even the UN itself is facing a leadership dilemma: Secretary General Antonio Guterres wraps up his second term on December 31, and it is unclear who will be chosen to lead the UN for the next five years. The organization also requires major changes to better incorporate large economies and powers across Asia and the Global South – currently, those who stand to benefit are the European and North American nations in power.
Many of these leaders, including those of the US, France, Ukraine, and Israel, will speak in the coming days, but other nations have largely dismissed the General Assembly. China’s Xi Jinping is sending a vice president in his place, and neither Russia nor India will attend the meeting at all. Many of these nations view the UN as an already-biased institution allowing the Western world to restrict developing nations – unfortunately, many international organizations have been used this way in past years, leading to a loss of trust in the UN.
Nevertheless, many remain hopeful that these problems can be addressed this year – in the face of extreme danger, cooperation is key, and the world has done it before. The challenges this time around are tougher, more complex, and more severe than ever before, but maybe we can do it again.
The Global Snapshot
Germany’s incumbent Christian Democrats (CDU) are in trouble after the latest round of state elections. Several weeks ago, Alternative for Germany (AfD), a far-right party, almost won the right-wing stronghold of Saxony-Anhalt with an outright majority, and they appear to have made several gains in other states as well. In the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which just held elections, the AfD gained major ground, winning 38.2% of the vote – meanwhile, Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats won just 4.9%, which is even below the baseline threshold of 5% that keeps out parties that cannot gain enough support. In Berlin, the AfD and CDU were relatively equal, while the far-left Die Linke party collected 25.7% of the vote. Essentially, Merz’ administration appears to be losing control and votes, and the CDU will need to find a way to adjust or win other states if they aim to keep a parliamentary majority.
Outrage against ICE has broken out again after an officer shot and injured an illegal immigrant in Austin yesterday, sparking protests and angry demonstrations. The exact reason behind the shooting has not been revealed, but initial reports suggest that the Venezuelan immigrant, identified as 28-year-old Wilber Rafael Garcés Perez, was fleeing on foot when he was wounded by the officer. Emergency responders arrived within several minutes to take the man to a nearby hospital, and he is now believed to be in ICE custody after entering a stable condition.
