At a Republication convention in Dallas yesterday, Trump made a statement that surprised many citizens, including those of his own party: he promised to give every American adult $5,000 if the Republicans win the midterms.
According to estimates, the promise would likely cost more than $1 trillion and require approval from Congress, making it highly unlikely to be executed. Additionally, this $1 trillion would further expand the nation’s massive budget deficit, which currently stands at a staggering $1.8 trillion and is continuing to rise every day as inflation persists.
Vice President JD Vance attempted to morph the promise by later stating that the money, which Trump labeled as the “Trump Dividend,” would not go towards wealthy adults, and it could be paid for by ongoing tariffs against other nations.
However, the federal government has collected just $195 billion in tariffs since Trump came into office, and much of that money is being refunded after a Supreme Court decision struck down most of Trump’s tariffs earlier this year.
Democrats highlighted the clear fact that Trump made a statement that Republicans were not expecting, which has become the norm of his presidential term. Now, as part of an attempt to gain some support for the midterms – which the Republicans appear poised to lose – Trump made a surprising statement that may be another of many to come.

At least five people are dead and more than 87 others remain missing after a massive fire broke out onboard a ferry in the Philippines yesterday. The fire erupted aboard the M/V June Aster – en route from Manila to Coron – after it had sailed more than 1.3 miles away from the shore, leaving passengers with nowhere to go but the water. 42 people have been rescued and five have been confirmed dead, but the rest of the 134 people onboard are still yet to be found.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy saw a near miss yesterday after a drone almost hit his plane over Moldova, a small nation between Ukraine and Romania. Zelenskyy was en route to Oslo to attend the funeral of Norway’s King Harald V, who passed away two weeks ago at the age of 89. Norway’s prime minister asserted that the drone had almost hit Zelenskyy’s plane, but other members of the Ukrainian government argued that the drone simply set off an alert after entering Moldovan airspace. Nevertheless, the leader arrived in Oslo safely and attended the funeral, which was also attended by royal family members – such as Britain’s Prince William and Japan's Crown Prince Akishino –and dozens of other world leaders.
Apple held their September event for 2026 yesterday, with this year’s edition labeled “Surprise and Shine.” The event was the company’s first under the leadership of new CEO John Ternus, who officially took over for Tim Cook on the first of this month. At the event, Apple announced the iPhone Duo, a $1,999 foldable iPhone that will look to compete with foldables from Samsung and Google, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, and AirPods 5. Each product will feature new updates from last year, though the company notably excluded a base model iPhone 18 from this year’s lineup. Additionally, a fully revamped Siri AI will come to iPhone 15 Pro and later as a beta edition later this month as a part of the latest iOS 27 software update.
