The Breakdown
US President Donald Trump has temporarily halted the US-Iran War, but tensions continue to escalate as Yemen’s Houthis launch attacks on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Trump chas claimed that the suspension in strikes is to provide time and space for negotiations to take place, allowing a possible ceasefire to be worked out. In fact, he went further to assert that Iran has asked for the stoppage in hostilities, but the US remains ready to attack if the negotiations are unsuccessful.
However, Iran has refuted these claims, alleging that no talks are taking place and they have made no such requests. Instead, some experts suggest that Trump may have made the move to allow American troops and military operations to regroup ahead of a possible escalation.
Others argue that an escalation of the war, which Trump has repeatedly threatened, is increasingly unlikely due to depleted American military reserves. Recent reports have confirmed that the US is short on crucial defense missiles and other ammunition stockpiles after weeks of intense fighting, and the administration is facing mounting internal pressure to minimize expenditures as the costs of the war continue to rise – Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated earlier this month that the cost of the war is at least $37.5 billion, but some estimates place that number at more than $100 billion or even as high as $1 trillion.
These numbers have angered many American citizens and leftist advocates, who argue that Trump is simply spending for his financial gain. Reports have confirmed that Trump has purchased millions of dollars in stocks of several companies and defense contractors for the Pentagon, such as Lockheed Martin, which directly profit from the replenishing of American weapons stockpiles. However, Trump and other Republicans have vehemently denied these allegations.
Another reason for the possible stoppage includes recent outrage over those killed in the war. The Pentagon recently lowered the death count of the conflict from 18 to 14, sparking intense backlash over those excluded from the list. However, the administration asserted that those four fatalities occurred after the April ceasefire, which did not deem them part of Operation Epic Fury – the name given to the current military campaign in the Middle East. To quell the protests, those four deaths have been placed on a separate list located on a completely different webpage, titled “Overseas Operations starting July 7th.”
Nevertheless, the impact of the conflict remains severe. Gas prices experienced a drop after the news of the stoppage in hostilities, but Americans are still facing average prices of over $4 per gallon at the pump. Middle Eastern countries are struggling to export oil as the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked, crippling economies, and Yemen’s Houthi terrorist group is now attacking ships in the Red Sea.
After the closure of Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait – which serves as the gateway to the Red Sea and therefore the Suez Canal – became even more crucial. The Houthis, which are closely aligned with Iran, are striking vessels and raising insurance costs for shipping companies as they attempt to support the Iranian regime, alongside rising tensions with Saudi Arabia.
In addition to these issues, the war remains highly unpopular. According to a new poll from CBS and YouGov, at least 57% of Americans are frustrated about the current conflict, and just 19% are optimistic about how it will turn out.
Trump is set to meet with Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later today to discuss the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, hoping to align stances ahead of what appears to be a tumultuous few months ahead.

At least three people are dead and four others have been hospitalized after a chaotic shooting in downtown Seattle took place yesterday. Two young people opened fire on each other in the middle of a crowded food festival, sending people sprinting from the scene. One of the culprits has been apprehended, while the other is on the run but is not considered to be dangerous. The incident is the third shooting in the city within the last few days. On Thursday, a man opened fire on a vehicle carrying three adult women – one was hit with multiple bullets but survived, while the other two were also severely injured by flying glass. The suspect is still at large. Then, on Friday, a group of suspects opened fire on a man walking down the street, who returned fire. Two bystanders caught in the crossfire were later hospitalized but survived, and the suspects are still on the loose.
Another suspected act of Islamic terrorism has taken place in Europe – this time, in Paris. Three women were wounded after a man wielding two large kitchen knives targeted female citizens on the streets of northern Paris – the three victims have been hospitalized but are no longer in critical condition. Several bystanders attempted to defend the women, with one man attacking the attacker with a suitcase and a waiter from a nearby restaurant hitting him with a chair. In the end, the man was detained by an off-duty police officer jogging through the area, and he was reported saying “It is Allah who commanded me.” However, authorities have been reluctant to jump to conclusions, as the man was reported to be highly mentally unstable.
Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar won the Tour de France 2026 on Sunday to take home his fifth win, tying with some of the world’s most legendary cyclists to tie the record for most wins at Tour de France. The 27-year-old is the youngest person to achieve such a feat, and he plans to compete again next year for a shot at winning a record-breaking sixth title. Unfortunately, this year’s edition was shortened during the final stage, as police securing the route were needed to help combat the nearby wildfires near the city of Bordeaux and evacuate residents in danger.
