The Breakdown
The Trump administration has banned several Canadian exports entirely as the US-Canada trade war intensifies, raising prices for consumers on both sides of the border and disrupting supply chains.
Earlier in August, Trump announced sweeping 50% tariffs on a wide variety of Canadian products, citing “discriminatory treatment” of American exports in the Canadian market. They also highlighted Canadian vehicle imports from China, which are a major source of competition for US-made cars, alongside other issues like illegal immigration and the fentanyl trade.
After weeks of negotiations, a deal was in place, but the administration’s negotiators introduced a variety of extreme demands that Canada considered as a direct threat to their sovereignty. Canada argued that the demands were an attempt by the Trump administration to meddle in their domestic and international affairs, which they had no business in.
This greatly angered Prime Minister Mark Carney and his administration, who swiftly decided to match the US tariffs, dollar-for-dollar. Therefore, 50% tariffs went into effect yesterday on a variety of American goods, including steel, electronics, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp, and paper. Together, the products affected by the Canadian levies are worth around $20 billion.

Now, the US is banning several Canadian commodities entirely, including some dairy products, motorcycles, and most alcoholic beverages. The ban will take place on September 29 and represents the further deterioration of a once-strong relationship, concerning many on both sides of the border.
However, the key issue for consumers will be prices – inflation is on the rise, housing costs are sky-high, thousands of layoffs are being conducted by major employers, and gas prices are near record levels. A trade war with the United States’ second-largest trade partner is the last thing consumers need, and making it through this tough time economically will present a significant challenge for the American public throughout these next few months, if not longer.

OpenAI has claimed that one of their newest models has solved one of the Millennium Prize Problems, a set of seven math problems thought to be almost impossible to solve. Only one has ever been solved – the Poincaré Conjecture by Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman in 2003 – and those who solve a problem receive a $1 million prize from the Clay Institute of Mathematics. Now, OpenAI claims that an unreleased model solved the Navier–Stokes Existence and Smoothness problem in just 88 hours, impressing many mathematicians and concerning others.
Allies like the UK, France, and Canada have sanctioned Israeli settlements amid ongoing violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, highlighting Israel’s increasing isolation from the rest of the world as they continue to commit atrocities in Gaza, Lebanon, and the West Bank. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband confirmed that Israel has been engaging in “ethnic cleansing of Palestinians,” blaming “settler terrorists” for their recent actions and the Israeli government for turning “a blind eye to this and worse.” Israel rebuked the three nations for their statements, but the US did not support them on the international stage – another sign of the increasing fragmentation between former allies in the Western world.
US consumers are paying a premium at the pump as gas prices surge to their highest in months due to recent flare-ups in the Strait of Hormuz. The national average for gas hit a staggering $4.22 today, with diesel reaching an all-time high of $5.94 per gallon. Democrats have blamed the Trump administration and the ongoing war in Iran, which continues to negatively affect the trade of global oil, but Republicans have defended their actions as a necessary cost of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Republicans have maintained that prices will drop back down when the conflict winds down – but the end of the war appears nowhere in sight.
