The Breakdown
US President Donald Trump has announced a major deal with nine pharmaceutical firms to lower drug costs for American consumers, further expanding TrumpRx policies to include more than 90% of the pharmaceutical industry.
In February, Trump announced an initiative known as TrumpRx, a government website dedicated to providing lower-cost drugs to Americans. According to recent reports, Americans pay more than double per person on healthcare compared to other wealthy nations – the average American spent $14,775 on healthcare in 2024, making up more than 17.2% of total GDP.
However, TrumpRx does not sell drugs directly. Rather, the website provides Americans with coupons that they can exchange at their nearest pharmacy, allowing them to receive discounts on certain products. TrumpRx displays the lowest cost on the market for generic versions of drugs, helping consumers avoid paying premiums for name-brand products. Those against Trump cite TrumpRx as one of the rare moves they support, particularly those facing steep healthcare costs.
Under the administration’s “most-favored-nation” pricing policy, people who pay for medications out of pocket can receive significant discounts on drugs that can cost upwards of $10,000 in monthly maintenance.
Pharmaceutical companies that negotiate deals with the Trump administration can avoid tariffs by lowering prices to match those found in other countries, but there is a key element to the pricing – it does not apply to insured consumers.
The steeply-discounted pricing found on TrumpRx only applies to uninsured, underinsured, or cash-paying consumers, and the money put towards these drugs cannot count towards insurance deductibles. Instead, the system circumvents insurances completely, securing a direct, discounted payment between consumers and a company, which TrumpRx labels as “presidential deals.”
It currently offers this “most-favored-nation” pricing on 80 medications – but that number is set to rise as the administration implements a new agreement with several pharmaceutical companies.
According to Trump, the deal will save American consumers more than $600 billion, and TrumpRx will now secure low-cost access to drugs from 26 companies that make up 90% of the pharmaceutical market. The first corporations that the administration targeted were the five pharmaceutical giants: Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly and Co, Pfizer, Merck & Co, and AbbVie. The new companies are of a smaller size than the initial giants, but still bring in significant revenue: Alcon, Astellas Pharma, BeOne Medicines, BridgeBio, CSL, Kyowa Kirin, Sun Pharma, Teva Pharmaceuticals and UCB.

Several people have been confirmed dead after severe flooding hit the Grand Canyon on Monday. Flash floods are common in the rocky canyon due to the low soil absorption rate, leaving water above the ground. This water collects in the Colorado River, which flows through the canyon, creating a dangerous torrent of muddy water that can sweep away people and infrastructure. Over a dozen people are still missing after yesterday’s floods, which hit the Bright Angel River region on the east side of the canyon. An important water pipeline, known as the Transcanyon Waterline, traveling along the canyon’s South Rim was also damaged, alongside several footbridges and trails.
The Supreme Court has allowed construction of Trump’s White House ballroom to continue while they decide on its legality, reversing rulings from lower courts to block the construction while the decision is made. In a 5-4 ruling, the heavily split court ruled that the active construction did not directly harm anyone and would likely cost millions more to halt. Estimated costs of the ballroom have ballooned to more than $600 million overall, with around $300 million funded by taxpayers – and citizens are paying around $300 million in additional funds for the adjustments made to the White House to accommodate the construction. In the ruling, Chief Justice John G. Roberts did express that the ballroom is “likely unlawful,” hinting at a possibly unprecedented legal standoff in the months to come.
Soccer legend Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from the Argentina national team, ending the international career of one of the greatest players the sport has seen. Under Messi’s leadership, the team won the World Cup, two Copa América titles, and an Olympic gold medal, and Messi himself briefly became the World Cup’s all-time top goalscorer in June before being surpassed by Kylian Mbappé later in the tournament. After more than 20 years, Messi has wrapped up his historic career on the international stage – though, he will continue to play for Major League Soccer team Inter Miami, who are currently placed second out of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference.
