300,000 Evacuated Amid Raging Wildfires in France, Spain

The Breakdown
Firefighters battle the blazes, spraying water and setting up barriers, but it is no use. The raging fires are inching closer and closer to major cities, and hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated.
The sharp uptick in wildfires corresponds with the recent rise in temperatures across western Europe, which is suffering from an increasing number of heat waves during the summer season.
A heat wave in June killed thousands of people as temperatures exceeded 100°F (38°C) across France and Spain, and various drowning incidents were reported as locals scrambled to cool off in pools, lakes, and rivers.
Now, amid the latest rise in temperatures, major wildfires have broken out. A pair of fires near the Spanish capital of Madrid have merged, forcing tens of thousands of evacuations as they burn through homes and businesses on the outskirts of the city. At least one person has been confirmed dead. Firefighters are battling the blaze as best they can, but the fire continues to expand.
However, another wildfire has grown even larger. A raging blaze through France’s southwestern department of Gironde has inched closer to the city of Bordeaux, which maintains a population of more than 1.3 million people across its wider metropolitan area. The fire near Bordeaux is moving uncontrollably, and high winds are driving the flames straight towards the city’s western suburbs.
According to French authorities, more than 220,000 evacuations have been ordered from the Bordeaux fire alone. Unfortunately, the region is notoriously vulnerable to wildfires due to the sheer forest cover Nouvelle-Aquitaine region – more than 7.2 million acres.
Strong winds across the region are driving the spread of the fires, but temperatures remain volatile. Today and tomorrow are expected to cool off as the heat wave moves east, and higher humidity levels may allow firefighters to get a grip on the fires. Nevertheless, after Tuesday, temperatures will heat back up, reaching 104°F (40°C) in Madrid and 102°C (39°C) in Bordeaux on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, wildfire risks are growing in central Europe as temperatures rise – by Thursday, temperatures will approach or even cross 100°F (38°C) across cities like Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, and Prague.

Typhoon Noul has slammed into southeastern China – yet another dangerous storm in what is turning out to be a devastating typhoon season for the region. Noul made landfall earlier today near Hong Kong with sustained winds of 90 mph and heavy rain, forcing the city to suspend public transportation and cancel hundreds of flights. Hundreds of thousands of people have also been evacuated, and much the province is expected to receive at least several inches of rain through the next 24 hours.
