Welcome to today’s daily update for Saturday, October 24, 2026. Here’s everything you need to know.
The Breakdown
Under a ceasefire brokered by the United States, Russia and Ukraine will cease their battle over the city of Oleshky amid a major humanitarian crisis unfolding in the town.
Located on the eastern bank of the Dneiper River at its entrance to the Black Sea, Oleshky has been a major point of contention in the war so far. Russian forces have managed to approach the river from the east and south, capturing settlements on those sides of the bank. Meanwhile, the western and northern banks of the river are largely Ukrainian territory, encompassing major front-line cities like Kherson.
After occupying Oleshky, Russian forces imposed a military blockade around the city, stopping all food and supplies from entering. Many residents have been forced to eat garden weeds and wild-growing plants in order to survive this period, drawing international criticism over the blockade.
Now, after extensive negotiations – mediated by the American government, specifically Melania Trump – the two nations have agreed to back off on Oleshky until the city is able to recover fully. The exact details of the ceasefire have not been released, but Russia and Ukraine will likely pull forces away from the Kherson region as a whole as they allow Oleshky to recuperate. Both countries have also confirmed that anyone who desires to leave the town during this time period may do so, but they have not specified whether these residents would evacuate to Ukraine or Russia.
However, before supplies can be delivered to residents, authorities must work to remove the hundreds of mines scattered around the city’s borders, posing a major threat to humanitarian trucks or medical support that attempt to enter the area.
