The Breakdown
Protests are sweeping across Europe, taking place in France for the third weekend in a row while Germany deals with new demonstrations of their own.
In France, protesters are continuing to demand higher education spending and other economic reforms, with some demonstrations turning violent amid widespread anger. However, the situation has been much more moderate than the first weekend of protests, where police were unprepared to handle the sheer amount of looting and violence that took place.
Arrests are also decreasing, with just 779 people detained this weekend compared to more than 2,600 on the first weekend and around 1,300 last weekend.
Nevertheless, violence remained prevalent in some spots, with people throwing various objects at police officers, including fireworks at the base of the Eiffel Tower. In eastern Paris, some protesters threw Molotov cocktails, a dangerous incendiary weapon that is also known as a petrol bomb. These bombs are made using flammable liquids like alcohol inside a breakable glass bottle, often mixed with other substances like motor oil. A cloth rag is used to seal the bottle and is used as a wick to light before throwing the device. At least 15 officers were injured by the explosions, including one whose leg caught fire, and a police car also went up in flames.
French authorities have launched an investigation into the cocktail explosions and are looking at it as attempted murder due to the threat such actions posed towards police – therefore, they have classified the attackers as hostile adversaries instead of protesters. Officers caught up in the clash have confirmed that they were not normal Molotov cocktails, but rather, contained something unusual that caught fire incredibly effectively.
In Germany, the protests were more violent, with more than 120,000 people taking part in demonstrations advocating for lower cost-of-living and higher education spending. The protests were led by Gen Z groups, who saw the most turnout.
However, this weekend left Germany unprepared – masked citizens broke windows and looted hundreds of stores, forcing police to use water cannons to dispel violent protesters. Molotov cocktails were also thrown at authorities in Frankfurt, and one person was arrested by authorities after breaking into a gun shop and wielding two weapons on the street. As a whole, dozens of people were arrested, and at least 27 officers were injured.
German officials blamed the violence on “left-wing groups and troublemakers from immigrant communities,” claiming they had shifted the protests away from their original, non-violent purpose.
The Global Snapshot
At least nine people are dead after a plane crash in Palm Beach, Florida yesterday, and officials have launched an investigation. The private jet, a Learjet 60, was traveling from Austin, Texas to the Bahamas when the pilot reported encountering ice crystals over Florida. She requested permission to fly above the ice to 37,000 feet, but the plane nosedived soon after. Locals reported that the crash was like a missile, and the pilot confirmed during her mayday call that the aircraft was dropping at around 20,000 feet per minute. The plane slammed into a busy roadway, and the subsequent explosion left fiery metal chunks raining on a nearby neighborhood of trailer homes, where multiple trailers caught fire. Authorities are still evaluating the impact of the crash on the community, while investigators are beginning to analyze the possible causes of the incident. However, they have confirmed that the most likely cause would be ice buildup on the wings, which can destroy airflow within a matter of seconds and leave the plane plummeting.
Fact of the Day (The Fact Site): Canadian law requires citizens to answer a math question when entering sweepstakes. This is done to add some aspect of skill to the contest rather than making it based on pure luck.
Quote of the Day (Gracious Quotes): Everyone talks about age, but it’s not about age. It’s about work ethic. Winning never gets old. (Lisa Leslie)
Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster): Pyrrhic (adj, PEER-ik) - The adjective Pyrrhic describes something that is achieved at an excessive cost. It is usually used to describe a victory, a Pyrrhic victory being one that is not worth winning because so much is lost to achieve it.
In a Sentence: The basketball team’s comeback in the final minutes turned out to be a Pyrrhic victory as the star center injured her ankle.
