Keir Starmer Resigns as Prime Minister of the UK
Your Daily Update for June 23, 2026. Plus: Keir Starmer has resigned from his position as prime minister, making way for Andy Burnham to take the lead of the Labour Party.
In 2015, Keir Starmer was first elected to be a member of Parliament (MP), during a time when the nation was led by Prime Minister David Cameron. Cameron served from 2010 to 2016 during one of the nation’s last periods of stability, with the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union – known as Brexit – sparking his resignation. Cameron campaigned vigorously for the UK to remain in the organization, but a key referendum on the issue resulted in a win for his opposition – 52% of the public voted to leave the EU, guaranteeing that efforts would take place to seal the decision.
Following Cameron’s resignation, the UK government has remained highly unstable. Theresa May became prime minister under the Conservative Party in 2016, but her repeated failures to finalize a withdrawal agreement from the EU led to her resignation in 2019. Brexit officially took place under Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who won a massive majority in the 2019 general election. However, allegations of misconduct and his participation in various schemes during the COVID-19 lockdown led to a major revolt in 2022, forcing him to resign.
Liz Truss then took over the position, but the Conservative Party withdrew their support for her after her extreme economic policies and tax cuts caused the pound to plummet. She resigned after just one month as prime minister, making way for Rishi Sunak. Sunak led the country for two years, but the Conservatives’ disastrous defeat in the 2024 House of Commons election led to his resignation.
Keir Starmer led the Labour Party to their first victory since 2010 in the following general election, bringing him into the role of prime minister of the United Kingdom. However, after years of government instability, rising inflation, and mounting national debt, Starmer faced a serious task ahead.
Now, two years later, his own Labour Party has withdrawn their support. Criticism over the prime minister’s handling of the government grew over time, particularly due to discontent over increases in military spending, unpopular welfare reforms, and tax increases, among other economic policies.
Nevertheless, the serious bombshell for Starmer arrived in May, when the party lost almost 1,500 councillor seats in local elections. Labour Party MPs quickly realized that the prime minister was losing support and quickly turned on him, forcing his resignation.
Andy Burnham, an MP who just won the constituency of Makerfield, is currently leading the list of candidates that could take over the Labour Party – whoever assumes the position would instantly become prime minister, but elections for the party’s leadership would only take place in September.
Burnham’s primary policies are still unknown, as he is a new member of Parliament, but his decisions on key issues will serve as the basis for the British economy as they move forward into what citizens hope will be a time of more certainty and stability in the nation’s government.

The United States Treasury has confirmed that they will lift sanctions on Iranian oil exports for the next 60 days after “productive” talks in Switzerland. The suspension will allow Iran to ramp up oil exports, sell oil using the US dollar, and strike deals with American importers during a time where consumers are suffering from high gas prices and oil inventories have been severely depleted.
At least 18 people have been killed in France as an extreme heatwave strikes western Europe. Temperatures in some parts of France have exceeded 104°F (40°C) this week, and daytime highs continue to regularly reach 90°F (32°C) in much of the UK, Spain, Germany, and Italy. Due to the nations’ lack of widespread air conditioning, various sporting and cultural events have been canceled due to the oppressive heat.
An explosion at the Ras Laffan gas facility in Qatar yesterday killed 13 people, and several others are currently missing. The blast occurred as the export terminal finally restarted operations, months after an Iranian missile struck the facility in March.
