Welcome to today’s daily update for Saturday, October 3, 2026. Here’s everything you need to know.
The Breakdown
The Group of Seven (G7) has confirmed the release of more than 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel from global stockpiles across the next four months, aiming to bring prices down amid the ongoing war in Iran.
The group began with just six members – the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom – in 1975 before adding Canada to the bloc in 1976, establishing the G7. In 1998, Russia joined to form the G8, but their status was suspended after their annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014.
Together, the G7 nations maintain massive emergency stockpiles of crucial resources like crude oil and diesel, managed by the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA). These reserves help prevent against global supply chain shocks, such as those seen after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz as the US and Israel attacked Iran earlier this year.
After the strait’s shutdown, the IEA announced the opening of more than 400 million barrels of crude oil to the global market in the agency’s largest-ever coordinated release.
Nevertheless, since the closure of the strait, prices of oil, gas, and diesel have skyrocketed. Diesel, in particular, is more vulnerable to supply chain shock – its creation requires heavy crude oil, which necessitates a complex refining process and yields less volume per gallon than gasoline.
Continued Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and fresh Iranian strikes on Middle Eastern refineries added to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, forcing diesel prices on a rapid climb. Two weeks ago, diesel prices in the United States hit their highest-ever, averaging a staggering $6.53 per gallon across the nation – shooting past records set during the Biden administration in 2021.
Now, as the group imposes “decisive, coordinated measures” to attempt to bring down prices and stabilize the global supply chain, the G7 has confirmed the release of more than 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel from their emergency stockpiles, divided across the next four months. However, they have not specified how many of those barrels will be crude oil and how many will be diesel.
US officials have emphasized that prices are expected to fall sharply after the release, but opposition parties have argued that the price drops will take time and will happen gradually. Furthermore, others have pointed out that the release is simply a band-aid solution to a larger problem, and the settling of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Russia is the only way to bring down prices across the long term.
The Global Snapshot
Tennessee’s prison system is in chaos after an attempt to execute the state’s first woman on death row in more than 200 years went wrong this week. Christa Pike was arrested and placed on death row more than 30 years ago after brutally murdering a classmate at the age of 18 alongside her boyfriend, who was sentenced to life in prison. Pike faced a yearslong battle in court over whether she would face execution or life in prison, but the state of Tennessee decided to go through with the execution via lethal injection this week. However, after being given two doses of pentobarbital, a chemical that was recently reapproved by the Trump administration for use in executions, Pike remained alive and was left in critical condition. She is now on a ventilator in a Nashville hospital, but her botched execution has raised controversy across the nation – some argue that the state should go through with the penalty, while others supporting Pike have advocated for her sentence to be commuted to life in prison after her suffering.
Two Iranians have been charged with plotting a terrorist attack against a Jewish community in northern England around two weeks ago. The two men, Rahman Salehi and Salam Ahmadyan, planned to commit or assist each other in executing an act of terrorism during Yom Kippur, which took place between September 20 and 21. According to local authorities, both men, who had legal status under asylum, had attempted to obtain several components needed to create an improvised explosive device and had completed research to find potential targets. Iran has denied any involvement in the plot, but the two are now in custody and will face their charges in court.
