The Breakdown
European leaders met in Kyiv yesterday to celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day, marking the fifth time it has taken place since the Russo-Ukraine War began in 2022. August 24, 2026 was also the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, making it a major part of the nation’s history.
However, one nation was absent from the summit – the United States. US President Donald Trump did not make the trip, and neither did his special envoys, David Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Both have not been to Kyiv for any sort of talks, though they have been to Moscow at least eight times for talks with Russian officials. Former US Vice President Mike Pence did fly to Ukraine over the weekend, though.
During the meeting, various European leaders reaffirmed their commitments to backing Ukraine’s fight against Russian incursions, which are making significant progress.
The European Union also confirmed that they would provide more than $7.1 billion through a new military assistance package, using the bloc’s $105 billion loan on capital markets. The EU recently agreed on a financing framework that allows them to borrow from the market, issuing bonds in exchange for the funds. These funds are slowly being allocated towards Ukrainian support – around $13.5 billion have been handed out so far, a significant portion of which will head to this new package.
The UK also stated that they would share blueprints and other information regarding the SCALP cruise missile, also known as the Storm Shadow. The missile uses advanced technology to stay low to the ground, avoiding detection by radar before striking targets like bunkers or bases. With this new information, Ukraine will be able to build the missiles on their own soil, further strengthening the nation’s ability to launch new offensives.
The developments come just as the war between Russia and Ukraine is experiencing a period of serious intensification. Russia has launched scores of new missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, many of which they have been unable to take down due to a lack of interceptors.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has retaliated with drone attacks on various facilities, particularly Russian online retailers. The nation’s largest online retailer, Wildberries, has been decimated in Ukraine’s attacks, with seven of their ten largest logistics centers being destroyed in recent attacks. Now, Ukraine is targeting Russia’s second-largest retailer, Ozon – six of the company’s warehouses have gone down within the last three days due to Ukrainian attacks.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is making plans to take these corporations under control of the state, allowing them to seize assets and take on ownership of their respective facilities.

The British government has urged TikTok to remove all videos that glorify reckless driving, which are believed to have caused a serious vehicle crash in northeastern England on Saturday. A recent deluge of viral shorts has shown drivers driving extremely dangerously, including soaring past speed limits and driving on the wrong side of the road. Last week, five teenagers were killed in Ireland in a devastating crash, where the car was driving on the opposite side of the road. The four people in the other car were also seriously injured. Then, on Saturday, a similar incident took place – five teenagers driving on the wrong side of the road crashed into a police car carrying two officers, and everyone was killed in the resulting collision. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham called the videos “utterly disgraceful” and called on TikTok to take action, but the platform has maintained that their policies already prevent such content.
The United States is descending into a full-blown trade war with Canada, with President Donald Trump threatening to raise tariffs on automobiles, trucks, car parts, and steel to 50% by January 1. Trump lambasted on Truth Social that Canada was “among the worst Nations in the World to deal with,” and announced that “Someone should get these clowns to ‘fall in line.’” Within the last few days, US-Canada relations have seen a serious breakdown, with the US introducing various last-minute demands into a possible trade deal that Canada claimed were a threat to their sovereignty. Now, US tariffs on more than $20 billion worth of Canadian goods have soared to 50%, and Canada plans to match the tariffs, dollar-for-dollar.
The US has also canceled upcoming drills with South Korea as Trump attempts to get closer to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, who has showed no interest in bolstering relations with the president. Last week, the president confirmed that the US would scale back joint military exercises that South Korea perceives as crucial to its security, citing cost concerns and the “hostile” signal it sends to North Korea. Now, Trump is cutting them out of the picture altogether, arguing that the nation must save resources to persist with the war in Iran. Furthermore, he has blamed South Korea for refusing to participate in the conflict, which could also be playing into his decision to halt the drills.
