The Breakdown
A pair of thieves stole a multi-million dollar necklace from Vienna’s Museum of Applied Arts yesterday in broad daylight, making global headlines.
The necklace was stolen from an exhibition dedicated towards Van Cleef & Arpels, a highly-exclusive French luxury jewelry designer. Van Cleef had loaned the necklace to the museum for the limited-time exhibition, known as Glanzstücke (Masterpieces), but it has been forced to reopen without the prized piece.
Made of more than 200 carats of diamond and platinum, the necklace was originally made for Queen Nazli of the Egyptian royal family in 1939. She famously wore it to the wedding of her daughter, Princess Fawzia, before leaving for the United States. There, she settled down in Beverly Hills and lived a lavish lifestyle, but eventually went bankrupt after several decades – leading to the Sotheby’s auction of her personal belongings, including the necklace.
It also contained 673 precious diamonds and was auctioned off in 2015 for around $4.3 million.
Now, authorities are on the hunt for the culprits that stole the necklace. According to local police, two men with dark hair and dark beards, dressed in black, entered the museum as regular visitors after buying tickets at the counter. They were not wearing masks, and their faces were captured on CCTV camera before their escape.
Both men entered the exhibit, and at least one of the two was armed. One of the men pulled out a hammer and smashed the case, grabbing the necklace before the two dashed out the exit, fleeing the scene on foot. No one was injured.
The brazen heist is yet another example of a major piece being stolen from a European museum within the last few years. Authorities have still not found more than $102 million worth of stolen jewels after a shocking heist at the Louvre in Paris last year. Earlier this year, a group of thieves stole priceless paintings by famous artists like Cézanne, Renoir, and Matisse from an Italian museum, but local police successfully found the culprits and recovered the stolen art this month.
Rather than prioritizing cash or works of art, thieves appear to be targeting jewels and gold that can be taken apart or melted down to make the heist untraceable – as is suspected to have been done with the jewels stolen from the Louvre last fall.
Therefore, Austrian authorities are still searching for the thieves of the multi-million dollar diamond necklace, but they will need to be quick – jewels can be melted down within weeks or even days of the original heist.

Iceland has just held a referendum to poll citizens on the topic of joining the EU, and initial counts appear to be extremely close. Icelanders have refused to restart talks to join the bloc in previous years due to fears that EU restrictions will limit the nation’s economy, particularly the fishing industry. Others do not want the country to lose their currency, the Icelandic króna, and there has been significant pushback. However, this year, the referendum could swing towards a ‘yes,’ which would allow the Icelandic government to begin talks with the EU to enter the lengthy process that is required before formally joining.
At least 37 people are dead after a Russian strike on a Ukrainian weapons depot, which was located extremely close to several civilian buildings and a hospital. The initial strike set off multiple secondary explosions of shells and artillery that flattened the surrounding area, raising questions over the location of the weapons and why they had been stored in a civilian area. Ukrainian authorities confirmed that the storage of the weapons in that location was an act of negligence and promised to look into the incident via a criminal investigation.
