Welcome to today’s daily update for Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Here’s everything you need to know.
The Breakdown
Bank of America has been fined a staggering $1.211 billion by government agencies as part of a major violation of compliance to rules meant to prevent money laundering.
An investigation found that the bank had willingly violated government anti-money laundering regulations by ignoring massive loopholes in its systems, allowing more than $5 billion in questionable transactions to successfully go through without oversight.
When banks detect potential criminal activity, they are required by US law to report this activity under a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR). Investigators successfully traced these transactions back to a variety of suspicious actors, like Chinese money laundering networks and drug cartels operating across Mexico and the southwestern United States. Bank of America saw these suspicious transactions and willingly chose not to report them, making their actions a massive violation of government regulations.
Furthermore, the bank processed hundreds of illegal payments to sanctioned entities across the globe, sending money to individuals and companies across countries like Russia, Iran, Belarus, and Somalia. These individuals or corporations had been sanctioned by the US government, essentially blacklisting them from any sort of transaction. However, Bank of America purposely chose not to update their list of sanctioned individuals, allowing payments to go through to these entities.
After being warned about these issues in December 2024 by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) – a governmental organization under the US Treasury that regulates banks and savings associations – Bank of America failed to act on them.
For this reason, rather than chasing after illegal money trails that may have disappeared, the government is going straight after Bank of America. The OCC has fined the bank $750 million, with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) imposing another $450 million in fines alongside $11.6 million from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
The bank will also be forced to make several other internal changes. One of these will be the hire of an independent third-party organization to audit previous suspicious transactions, and they will also be subject to various mandatory upgrades like employee training and other internal tests.
The Global Snapshot
The Houthis, an Iranian proxy group operating out of Yemen, have struck Saudi Arabia once again. This time, the group hit the headquarters of Aramco, a state-run multinational energy giant that manages the export of products from Saudi Arabia’s massive oil and gas reserves. The attack sparked a fire but did not result in any deaths. The strike came after Saudi Arabia hit a pair of oil facilities in Yemen yesterday, further escalating a growing conflict that has threatened global oil supplies traveling through the Red Sea. The Houthis have continued to launch airstrikes and drones into the Saudi capital of Riyadh – most have been intercepted, but a handful have made their way through Saudi defenses.
The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Leo is doing well after having a nodule removed from his lung, and he is currently being evaluated for further treatment by doctors. Yesterday, the Pope – who leads more than 1.4 billion Roman Catholics across the globe – was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, a relatively treatable type of lung cancer. The religious leader underwent a successful procedure to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, and he is now recovering in the hospital. Doctors are working to analyze samples from the surrounding areas to find out whether the cancer had spread further, which will likely determine whether he can travel or not in the coming months.
