Welcome to today’s daily update for Saturday, October 31, 2026. Here’s everything you need to know.
The Breakdown
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has reportedly been hacked by North Korea, raising concerns over future cyberattacks and the impact such incidents could have on the global economy.
Cryptocurrency, a form of digital currency that can be exchanged for physical money, relies on a system known as blockchain to function. All transactions take place on this blockchain system, with each user maintaining a public key and a private key. Public keys are used by other people to send cryptocurrency to you, and private keys are used by you to authorize transactions. Each of these transactions is stored under a particular account, and a user’s current total is calculated by adding up the cryptocurrency that has come in and subtracting the cryptocurrency that has been sent out.
Various different cryptocurrencies exist, the most famous of which are Bitcoin and Ethereum, but they are usually volatile – between October 2025 and October 2026, the value of a single Bitcoin fell by more than $40,000.
Meanwhile, the transactions for these cryptocurrencies run on external platforms – for example, Bitcoin only manages the currency, while payments and exchanges with other people take place somewhere else. In today’s world, that external platform is likely Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange platform.
Binance allows users to buy, sell, store, and trade cryptocurrency, similar to a stock exchange like the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). However, being a digital platform, Binance is vulnerable to hacks.
On Thursday, Binance suffered a massive hack that saw the exchange lose more than $6.3 billion worth of cryptocurrency. According to initial reports, North Korean hackers from an organization known as TraderTraitor were successfully able to infiltrate the device of a Binance software engineer, utilizing phishing and malware to make their way into the system.
Then, the hackers obtained private keys from ten different cryptocurrency networks, using the keys to funnel money away from investors and into the hackers’ accounts. Using advanced code, the hackers were successfully able to trick the system into signing a sweeper contract that funneled Binance’s very own money into their wallets. The entire incident took place within the span of just 20 minutes, sparking chaos across the cryptocurrency sector.
Reports came flooding in, and security firms and law enforcement were able to help Binance save around $3 billion worth of cryptocurrency from being stolen. Nevertheless, more than $6.3 billion was still stolen, making it the largest cryptocurrency theft in history.
Binance has confirmed that they will draw $6.34 billion from emergency funds to cover the cost of the hack, and they are currently launching a comprehensive investigation into how the incident unfolded and what steps can be taken to prevent such issues from happening again. However, they have stated that the hackers used an advanced “self-destruct mechanism” to cover their tracks, making their actions more difficult to decipher.
Nevertheless, the attack has raised concerns across the Western world over the potential that hackers from opposing countries may possess. Other nations like Russia and China may very well be developing these capabilities while Western countries like the US and Europe remain on the defensive.
The Global Snapshot
A federal court has resoundingly rejected the Trump administration’s latest attempt to attack California elections, blocking the Justice Department from taking action to subpoena election officials over suspicion of allowing noncitizen votes to enter the system. Despite fact-checks and pushback, Trump continues to assert that massive numbers of illegal immigrants are voting in American elections, prompting him to take action to prevent these noncitizen votes from skewing the election towards Democrats. The left, on the other hand, has dismissed the claims as falsehoods and pointed out that noncitizen voting makes up less than 5% of election-related offenses, let alone impacting the election as a whole. Californians attempted to refute the latest subpoenas from the administration, arguing that they were “unprecedented and unlawful,” and courts have sided with the local population.
Fact of the Day (The Fact Site): There is a Guinness World Record for the longest amount of time needed to create an official government – it is held by Belgium, which went 541 days without a newly formed government after federal elections in 2010 due to a political stalemate between coalitions.
Quote of the Day (Gracious Quotes): Sincerity and truth are the basis of every virtue. (Confucius)
Word of the Day (Merriam-Webster): Wraith (noun, RAYTH) - Wraith refers to the spirit of a dead person, or in other words, a ghost.
In a Sentence: The most frightening scene from the movie featured a vengeful wraith creeping slowly up behind the main characters.
