Hurricane Polo has made landfall in Mexico, bringing strong winds and heavy precipitation to northwestern Mexico and the southwestern United States.

The system began in the eastern Pacific, off the coast of southwestern Mexico before moving northwest, rapidly intensifying over warm waters. Polo reached Category 5 status last week, moving towards Baja California with devastating winds of more than 180 mph. However, after crossing a patch of cooler water, the hurricane weakened before landfall, crossing onto land as a Category 2 with winds of around 110 mph.

This year’s Super El Niño has seen highly above-average water temperatures across the Pacific, contributing to multiple dangerous hurricanes. Hurricanes draw moisture from the ocean in order to strengthen, and warmer water temperatures enable evaporation that provides systems with even more moisture. Most of the systems that have formed in the Pacific have avoided land, but several storms have impacted areas like Taiwan, China, Japan, and Hawaii.

Hurricane Polo is the first hurricane this year to make landfall in Mexico, and it is set to have a significant impact on the entire region, including the southwestern United States. The system is currently moving over a sparsely populated region of Baja California, but it could re-strengthen over the Gulf of California before making landfall on mainland Mexico in a day or two.

From there, Polo will bring strong winds to the region, but the serious concern will be rain. Much of northwestern Mexico is part of the Sonoran Desert, which receives between 3 and 15 inches of rainfall a year, depending on the region. A single storm system can drop that entire amount in a matter of days, triggering extreme flooding. After crossing through the region, Polo’s remnants will move into the southwestern United States, which also consist of a variety of deserts.

Last year’s Tropical Storm Priscilla brought extensive moisture to the region after following a similar track, dropping a year’s worth of rain over the desert in just a matter of hours – and meteorologists fear that Polo could do the same.

• OpenAI has confirmed that they will not release their latest ChatGPT model, GPT-6.1 Astra, amid intense safety concerns after a wave of breakouts. The company confirmed that the new model displayed significant levels of deception, purposely misleading users and going beyond the instructions given in the prompt without checking back. Testing of GPT-6.1 Astra saw multiple concerning incidents, including the hack of an open-source AI website known as Hugging Face and an attempt to break into the website for the US Department of Education.

• A Russian jet-powered drone struck Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences yesterday, leaving the building in flames. At least two people were killed and six others were injured after the drone made impact, destroying a building that has been home to Ukraine’s most influential scientific institution for more than 100 years. Most scientists and other employees were safely evacuated from the structure, but the incident depicted a stark image of how war can impact communities – even the most intelligent scientific minds saw their offices blown up and their belongings burned.

• The five men arrested near a US air base in the United Kingdom have been released on bail despite being investigated under suspicion of terrorism, raising concerns from locals. The five, which have been confirmed to be British nationals from London, were caught driving three white trucks toward the base at around midnight, and were arrested on the charges – however, it has not been revealed whether police actually found any explosives in the trucks. Counter-terrorism authorities are currently working to determine whether the men were actually terrorists or not, and whether they could have been backed by an external power like Russia or Iran. In the meantime, though, they have been released on bail, which has concerned many locals, but authorities have argued that they are still very much under investigation and will not be allowed to do as they please.

According to new statements, Egypt and the UAE claim to have warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the impending October 7 attacks by Hamas before they actually happened.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas – an Iran-backed terrorist organization – launched a massive incursion into southwestern Israel, making their way through various Israeli towns that surround the Gaza Strip. Under the mission, named Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, thousands of missiles and rockets were also launched, testing the strength of Israel’s Iron Dome defense system.

More than 1,200 Israeli civilians were killed, and around 250 others were taken hostage by Hamas. The organization declared that the attacks were in response to rising tensions between Israel and Palestine and the ongoing mistreatment of their people in Gaza and the West Bank.

However, Israel retaliated with fury, launching Operation Swords of Iron. They launched thousands of strikes and drones into Gaza, targeting both Hamas headquarters and civilian infrastructure. More than 74,000 Palestinians were killed, most of them civilians, and another 175,000 were injured. Almost the entire population of Gaza – a staggering 2.1 million people – has been displaced as Israel worked to systematically eliminate infrastructure in certain cities.

Now, two reports from Egypt and the UAE claim that they warned Netanyahu of the October 7 attacks before they actually happened.

Egypt’s spy chief, Abbas Kamel, called Netanyahu in June 2023 to warn him of the volatility of the situation in Gaza before flying to Israel in September. During that meeting, he warned Israel that the situation in Gaza would “blow up in everyone’s faces,” though he did not specify when the attack would arrive or share any details of what Hamas was planning. Then, just days before the October 7 attacks, Kamel called Netanyahu again, urging him to de-escalate the situation due to prior inaction.

Meanwhile, the UAE is said to have warned Netanyahu before the attacks as well. Emirati President Mohamed bin Zayed called Netanyahu in September 2023, urging him to take action on the possible threat of an upcoming Hamas attack. However, sources confirmed that Netanyahu was not convinced, possibly due to the lack of detail and specifics provided. Nevertheless, he did not pass the warning onto the heads of the IDF or anyone else in the government – instead, he argued that keeping peace with Gaza was important to maintain relations with Saudi Arabia.

Now, as these reports emerge, Netanyahu has vehemently denied any claims that he received an advance warning ahead of Hamas’ attacks. He has labeled their statements on these conversations as an “absolute lie,” continuing to place the blame on his national security ministers for the incident. Over the last few years, Netanyahu has continued to blame other officials for the incident without taking responsibility, arguing that he did not possess any intel that would have allowed him to predict the devastating attack.

The group were seen driving towards RAF Fairford, an airbase on UK soil that is operated by the United States, at around midnight in three white trucks. Authorities have not released many more details, apart from the fact that they can be detained for an extended period of time on suspicion of terrorism and that the attack could be linked to Iran – the US has used the airbase to house bombers that have conducted several strikes on Iranian territory.

More than a foot of rain fell on the Thai capital of Bangkok across the last three days, forcing thousands of evacuations and bringing traffic to a standstill.

The relentless rainfall began on Thursday before continuing into Friday and Saturday, with no sign of stopping. Accumulated precipitation totals in the city of Bangkok are up to around a foot, according to Thailand’s Meteorological Department, with some areas experiencing even more extreme flooding.

The government has confirmed that more than 84,000 people across 21 provinces of Thailand have been affected by the flooding, with one of the worst-hit areas being the highly-populated region around Bangkok.

All 50 districts of the city have been declared a flood disaster area to allow authorities to more effectively mobilize support, and around 4,200 people have been evacuated from their homes amid widespread inundation.

Traffic has also been brought to a standstill – it has been raining for days, meaning that many people like first responders, doctors, and other emergency personnel must still reach work despite the deluge. Most businesses have temporarily shut down, trains have been suspended, and flights have been delayed at the city’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Authorities are currently working to rescue as many people as possible, but efforts are going slowly amid continued rainfall. Floodwaters are expected to drain relatively quickly once the rain stops, but for now, the city and its surrounding regions will need to make it through some time before precipitation comes to a halt.

Monsoon season for Southeast Asia, which includes Thailand, lasts from May to October and sees a majority of the rainfall that the region receives in a year, but climate change and global warming are exacerbating the annual damage caused by these devastating storms.

Furthermore, this year’s Super El Niño – an extreme version of the rotating weather phenomenon known as El Niño – has led to highly above-average temperatures across the Pacific Ocean. These soaring water temperatures have heavily contributed to more moisture over the region, supercharging monsoons as they drop rainfall over the low-lying Bangkok region.

The United Nations General Assembly is well underway, and it has been incredibly eventful so far. Let’s dive into the biggest speeches so far.

Of course, US President Donald Trump had one of the most notable speeches of the assembly, delivering a 37-minute address packed with warnings, threats, and dramatic rhetoric.

The most controversial part of his speech arrived during a rather passionate segment about Iran:

Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before, maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East or even the world? Or do I annihilate the Islamic republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again?

His threat to “annihilate” Iran made global headlines soon after his speech, particularly after a mocking headline on an MS NOW broadcast.

Statements online condemned the president for his words, while memes praising the person who wrote the headline went viral online. One said, “Whoever wrote this banner deserves an award,” while others humorously referenced his campaign assertions of being “The Peace President” and mocked the false statement, “I have ended 7 wars in 7 months” – one of the many claims he made during his UNGA speech that were later confirmed to be false.

The day after Trump’s speech, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian blasted the United States and the United Nations a whole for threatening Iran and imposing a sort of unfair standard upon them. Pezeshkian asserted that the UN, which is largely controlled by Western nations, had created a negative narrative of Iran, particularly surrounding their nuclear program, while letting Israel walk scot-free for the atrocities committed in Gaza and allowing them to build their own nuclear arsenal in secret. Pezeshkian also criticized the US and Israel for targeting Iran in “cowardly attacks” and labeled the Iranian people as “victims of terrorism”.

On the topic of Israel, one of the other most significant speeches at this year’s assembly was that of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who practically spoke to an empty room. A large majority of the delegates at the UNGA walked out of the room as Netanyahu walked up to the podium, leaving a sparse set of Israeli allies sitting in their seats.

Netanyahu described US-Israeli efforts against Iran as a “battle against barbarians” and dismissed allegations of Israeli genocide against Palestinians as “the biggest lie.” He also called the diplomats who walked out “moral cowards” and labeled New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani an “antisemite” for speaking out against Israel’s brutal actions against Arab peoples in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, and other areas.

Many far-right Israelis have supported Netanyahu’s straightforward, aggressive approach towards international politics and state sovereignty, while others have argued that it simply increases negative sentiment against the Jewish community as a whole – particularly with the leader’s comment about Mamdani being an “antisemite”.

As a whole, various nations, including a collective push from dozens of African nations, called on the United Nations to implement reforms to de-Westernize the organization and make it more inclusive towards the Global South.

One of the issues, in particular, was the UN Security Council – the UNSC has five permanent members that possess ultimate veto power: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. African nations, which actually make up more than a quarter of the UN, and other developing countries argued that this framework fails to include the Global South in international affairs.

Others highlighted failures on the part of the UN as a whole, which has remained largely ineffective on global issues over the last 10 years. While the organization continues to provide or assist impoverished or struggling communities with humanitarian aid, basic infrastructure, and health supplies, the UN has remained unable to guarantee collective security, de-escalate conflicts, advance towards solving climate change, protect workers from the spread of AI, or de-nuclearize the globe, among a host of other primary points.

Furthermore, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will complete his second term on December 31, and it still remains unclear who will be chosen to lead the UN for the next five years. Seven key candidates have emerged as the primary competitors for the position, but no clear frontrunner has been revealed so far.

• The Supreme Court has allowed the Trump administration to launch a new database that would combine citizenship information like Social Security numbers to eliminate votes from non-citizens of the US. Ahead of the midterms, Trump has attempted to crack down on what he claims to be rampant issues with elections, particularly non-citizen voting. However, several studies have revealed that non-citizen voting has historically made up a very, very small portion of total votes, and the Supreme Court’s move to allow the usage of the database has worried Democrats that the administration could accidentally – or purposely – tamper with or discount the votes of actual American citizens.

• TikTok has settled with the state of Alabama in a new development that will see the company pay them $100 million alongside a host of significant product changes. Alabama’s lawsuit against TikTok alleged that the company had developed algorithms that were intentionally designed to addict users, particularly teenagers and children. Part of the settlement will see TikTok impose a two-hour daily time limit on child accounts, along with several other adjustments – however, the changes will only take place in the state of Alabama, and it is the first time that TikTok has settled with a particular state.

• According to a new study, this year’s Super El Niño could contribute to more than 450,000 heat-related deaths by February, concerning many over the other effects it may have. El Niño sees warmer temperatures and a drier climate across South and Southeast Asia, East Africa, and parts of South America while contributing to torrential rainfall in other parts of South America and strengthening hurricanes and typhoons in the Pacific. This year’s Super El Niño is expected to break records for one of the strongest, or even the strongest, on record – a trend that has persisted as global warming continues to ramp up.

The White House has restored access for CNN, MS NOW, and Politico after a district judge filed a temporary injunction against President Trump’s attempt to ban them for propagating “fake news.”

Last week, Trump announced that the three networks would be banned from entering the White House grounds due to their stance against his administration, which he considered harmful and a threat to “national security.”

Journalists from the three news corporations subsequently saw their entry passes revoked, forced to report from outside the grounds. They instantly filed a joint lawsuit against the move, arguing that the ban infringes upon their constitutional rights and was simply a way to silence the press.

CNN also happens to be a part of the White House “press pool,” a group of five news networks that covers the events taking place at the president’s residence. These five rotate coverage of the White House every five days, with each network covering events for one day in a rotation. However, CNN’s ban from the White House prevented them from executing their official duties as part of the press pool, sparking a complete shutdown of White House coverage from ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC.

Later on, the White House doubled down. They claimed that they did not need these networks and pivoted to the launch of “Trump TV,” a channel that would provide the latest news from the Trump administration. Many pointed out that this was practically state-run TV, which is common in communist or authoritarian states where the government controls the press.

However, the issue was temporarily resolved in the courts yesterday, with US District Judge Timothy Kelly confirming that the president’s ban is likely unconstitutional. While the lawsuit proceeds, the judge has reinstated journalists’ access for the next 14 days. Nevertheless, press passes for journalists of the three organizations were still not provided, forcing the judge to order the administration to respond in writing by 12:30 pm.

The administration complied with the order, and access for CNN, MS NOW, and Politico journalists was restored later in the day. It was not immediately clear why the move had not been made immediately.

• Yesterday, the Senate voted against ending the Iran war, barely blocking a Democrat-led resolution that would have seen the US remove forces from the Middle East in an attempt to wind down the conflict. Republicans, who hold a majority in the Senate, managed to block the resolution by just one vote, 50-49. The resolution had already been passed by the House, with several Republicans defecting to support Democrats amid rising concerns over the midterms. Early November will see the re-election of all of the seats in the House of Representatives and around one-third of Senate seats, putting Republicans at risk of losing their majority as the Trump administration continues on its highly unpopular agenda – current approval ratings for the president are down to somewhere between 32% and 38%.

• Concerns across Europe are quickly increasing after a new Danish report revealed that there is a “growing risk” that Russia could attack a NATO nation within months. Russia has been fighting against Ukraine for more than four and a half years, but the latter has not backed down, aided by military assistance and funding from various Western nations. Recent reports, European spies, and several leaders have confirmed that Putin could take a more radical stance towards the conflict in the near future as he becomes more frustrated with Ukraine, which could result in hybrid attacks on Europe. This type of conflict, known as hybrid warfare, lacks military strikes or physical damage – instead, Russia would attack intangible yet integral parts of a nation like internet, communications, and the power grid.

David Ellison’s Paramount Skydance has cleared the final hurdle in their battle to complete a $110 billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, ensuring that the deal will go through.

Last summer, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) announced that they would be considering a split, with the massive media company dividing its assets to increase efficiency and profits.

Global Networks, the live entertainment and cable side, would have included their news and sports channels – including CNN, TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network, and Discovery+. Meanwhile, the other side, Streaming and Studios, would have retained film production capabilities and incorporated streaming services like HBO.

However, WBD received strong interest from Paramount Skydance and Netflix – two media giants – towards purchasing some or all of these assets. Paramount and Netflix entered a bidding war for WBD, but Netflix succeeded in swaying the board of the company. The corporation’s leadership decided to sell the streaming and studios side of the company to Netflix for a staggering $82.7 billion, while the global networks side would be spun off into an independent company.

Nevertheless, David Ellison did not back down. He made multiple offers for a hostile takeover, culminating in a $110 billion offer that would see Paramount Skydance secure the entire corporation, including its substantial outstanding debt. Netflix, seeing the intense regulatory hurdles ahead of them, decided to give into Ellison’s deal, and Paramount was forced to pay them more than $2.8 billion in termination fees.

From there, Paramount Skydance needed to cross several key regulatory hurdles, one of the most significant of which was the Department of Justice. The DOJ reviews all major mergers to ensure that they do not violate federal antitrust laws, which are meant to ensure that no one company can hold a massive monopoly over a particular market.

Once cleared by the DOJ, Paramount Skydance needed to handle another significant hurdle – state lawsuits. California, alongside a coalition of 11 other states, sued Paramount over antitrust allegations, in addition to the massive impact that such a move could have on Hollywood and the movie industry.

Ellison is a strong believer in the artificial intelligence industry, leading many Hollywood advocates to predict mass layoffs on the way. Usually, when large corporations merge, substantial layoffs are bound to take place, but it was thought that the arrival of AI into Hollywood could exacerbate those effects.

California, however, took action on this front, and it paid off. Ellison decided to settle with the 12-state coalition instead of going to court, and he made several key concessions that will boost the film industry across the next few years.

According to the details of the settlement, the combined entity must release at least 30 movies for theatrical distribution within the first two years, increasing to at least 32 films in years three through five. Financially, the corporation must invest an additional $300 million annually into domestic film production, totaling $1.5 billion over five years. Finally, California secured a major win for Hollywood, legally prohibiting the company from selling off the Paramount Studios or Warner Bros. lots in Los Angeles for at least five years.

Now, the merger is past its major legal hurdles and is expected to be finalized in early October, clearing the way for massive changes across Paramount, Warner Bros., and their subsidiaries.

• Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in the United States to meet with President Donald Trump over several issues, including the key topic of Iran. China is the largest buyer of Iranian oil, which Trump has placed heavy sanctions on, and it is likely to be one of the core discussion topics throughout Xi’s visit. Furthermore, Trump has invited the leaders of various technology companies – including the likes of OpenAI, Nvidia, Meta, and more – to attend a state dinner later tonight that will likely revolve around the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and how to address fears regarding layoffs and an “AI doomsday.” Trump has repeatedly dismissed these concerns, claiming that they are sponsored by opponents to attempt to slow down the US in the AI race.

• Tigrayan forces have mobilized troops against the Ethiopian federal government in the city of Mekelle, raising fears that another civil war could break out in the highly-populated region. Tigray, a semi-autonomous region of northern Ethiopia, suffered from a deadly civil war between 2020 and 2022 where the Ethiopian government fought against the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) for control of the region. Communications blackouts prevented international media from gaining access to the events taking place, and the war is remembered today for the extreme violence and ethnic cleansing that took place during the conflict. In the end, the Ethiopian government took control of Mekelle, the Tigrayan capital, and the TPLF retreated from the front lines. Now, the TPLF has mobilized forces once again, seizing Mekelle’s airport in an attempt to retake the city from government forces. However, it has raised fears that the tension could reignite a civil war that killed as many as 600,000 people in two years.

According to a new report from over 60 scientists across multiple nations, humans have crossed seven of Earth’s nine planetary boundaries, which could spell danger for the future of humanity.

This framework was established by a group of 28 internationally renowned scientists in 2009, consisting of the following nine boundaries: climate change; change in biosphere integrity, which signifies overall health of ecosystems; land system change, which is how humans change land for other purposes like agriculture; freshwater change; modification of biogeochemical flows, which are Earth's natural nutrient cycles; introduction of novel entities, which are human-made products like microplastics; ocean acidification; stratospheric ozone depletion; and atmospheric aerosol loading, which measures the amount of fine particulate matter in the air.

Now, a new report has confirmed that humans have currently crossed seven of those nine boundaries, and the situation is worsening.

Stratospheric ozone depletion and atmospheric aerosol loading are the only two that humans are currently improving on – Earth’s ozone layer began recovering after the ban of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) aerosols in the 1990s, and human-caused atmospheric aerosol loading has decreased due to greater air quality restrictions and a recent shift away from fossil fuel plants in many nations.

The diagnosis is unambiguous – pressure is rising across every planetary boundary already outside the safe operating space.

It means that the risk of large-scale, persistent and potentially irreversible change is increasing, while our margin for error in tackling these problems is shrinking.

Several key issues that the report addressed were pollution and the emission of greenhouse gases, deforestation, and the release of waste and plastics into the environment. The ability of the planet’s forests and oceans to take this impact is rapidly declining, where they are no longer able to absorb more of the carbon dioxide that we emit. Furthermore, several important ecosystems, like the Amazon rainforest, are reaching tipping points where they could collapse entirely, wiping out millions of unique species and killing billions of trees.

Targeting these three key issues, though, could yield incredible results if global or at least multinational cooperation is secured. Scientists warn that several tipping points have already been crossed, but every tenth of a degree of warming that can be prevented, every plastic bottle that can be recycled, and every tree that can be protected can make a difference.

These fourteen nations are part of the Shield of the Americas, an organization created by the Trump administration to unite the Americas against drug trafficking, gangs, and illegal immigration. Opponents to the move argued that designating them as terrorists simply enables military action like strikes and attacks, which further enables gangs and kills civilians instead of taking a more strategic approach. However, conservatives have championed the move as a clear-cut strategy that will help eliminate criminal activity and curb the spread of potent drugs like fentanyl and heroin.

United States TV networks are fighting back against Trump’s White House bans, shutting down presidential coverage to express solidarity with CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.

Several days ago, US President Donald Trump announced that these three networks would be banned from the White House due to their propagation of “fake news,” which he perceives as harmful to his administration and a threat to “national security” – an allegation that he has also used to justify his construction of a $600 million ballroom on the White House grounds and his plans to build a large arch in Washington D.C. All three networks hold a slightly left-wing view on American politics and are often critical of Trump’s decisions, sparking the move.

By Saturday, all journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico had been banned from entering the White House grounds, preventing them from providing effective coverage on the president. However, the three quickly launched a joint lawsuit against the White House, arguing that the move infringes upon their right to freedom of speech, which is established in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

By Monday, the United States’ entire press pool, which includes ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox News, had halted all coverage at the White House to express solidarity with CNN, who are the fifth member of the pool. Journalists from this pool generally follow the president and attend all presidential events, meetings, and conferences while collecting statements, images, and video footage.

The pool shares the job by rotating responsibilities every day, with each network providing presidential coverage every five days. However, Trump’s ban on CNN prevents them from continuing these duties, sparking a complete shutdown of presidential coverage from all five networks.

The press pool made a joint statement in response to the ban as well: “The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”

However, the Trump administration doubled down on the ban after the shutdown. The White House announced their very own “Trump TV” on Monday afternoon, which they claimed would provide top-tier presidential coverage straight from the Trump administration.

Founded in 1945 after the end of World War II, the United Nations has stood for more than 81 years as a beacon of international cooperation and collaboration – despite their inability to pass binding legislation, different branches of the UN have facilitated aid distribution, fought back against injustice, and secured stability across the globe.

However, the UN now faces one of its toughest challenges yet, with the looming threat of AI alongside existing issues like climate change. Concerns that artificial intelligence could “go rogue” in the near future are increasing, particularly after a string of breakouts regarding OpenAI’s latest GPT models and Google’s Gemini.

Meanwhile, the world has just passed the 1.5°C warming threshold set by the Paris Agreement, meaning that catastrophic heating and global warming is now irreversible and will require rapid, coordinated action to prevent a runaway greenhouse effect from kicking in. Natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires are ravaging more and more land every year, particularly in developing countries that contribute much less to the climate change being induced by wealthy nations.

Conflicts are also endangering global safety – wars in Iran, Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and Myanmar have persisted across the last few years, driven by regional, ethnic, and religious tensions.

Even the UN itself is facing a leadership dilemma: Secretary General Antonio Guterres wraps up his second term on December 31, and it is unclear who will be chosen to lead the UN for the next five years. The organization also requires major changes to better incorporate large economies and powers across Asia and the Global South – currently, those who stand to benefit are the European and North American nations in power.

Many of these leaders, including those of the US, France, Ukraine, and Israel, will speak in the coming days, but other nations have largely dismissed the General Assembly. China’s Xi Jinping is sending a vice president in his place, and neither Russia nor India will attend the meeting at all. Many of these nations view the UN as an already-biased institution allowing the Western world to restrict developing nations – unfortunately, many international organizations have been used this way in past years, leading to a loss of trust in the UN.

Nevertheless, many remain hopeful that these problems can be addressed this year – in the face of extreme danger, cooperation is key, and the world has done it before. The challenges this time around are tougher, more complex, and more severe than ever before, but maybe we can do it again.

• Outrage against ICE has broken out again after an officer shot and injured an illegal immigrant in Austin yesterday, sparking protests and angry demonstrations. The exact reason behind the shooting has not been revealed, but initial reports suggest that the Venezuelan immigrant, identified as 28-year-old Wilber Rafael Garcés Perez, was fleeing on foot when he was wounded by the officer. Emergency responders arrived within several minutes to take the man to a nearby hospital, and he is now believed to be in ICE custody after entering a stable condition.

Earl Spencer, the brother of Princess Diana, is set to release a new memoir regarding her childhood, teenage life, and marital experience while including several controversial details about her death, raising concerns and tensions within the family.

Lady Diana Spencer was born into the Spencers, a rich, aristocratic English family that Queen Elizabeth II thought to be perfect for her son to marry into. Her son, Charles III – now the king of England – married Diana at the age of 32, when she was just 20 years old.

However, England’s latest royal family member, Diana, Princess of Wales, did not take time to make an impact. Within several years of their marriage in 1981, Diana had become one of the most loved women in the world – she was seen as a symbol of hope, resilience, and defying social norms in a repressive and strict society like the British monarchy. She worked with leprosy patients in Africa, homeless populations across London, and famously shook the hand of an AIDS patient without gloves on to prove the disease’s inability to spread via touch during the height of global panic.

However, by 1986, then-Prince Charles had resumed a previous romantic relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, who he had fallen in love with prior to his marriage to Diana. The public had always known that there was not much love between the two, and Charles always longed to be with someone else, but many found it atrocious that Charles had displayed his infidelity so publicly and so brashly.

By 1992, the pair had split, with Diana continuing her own philanthropic efforts while Charles continued to date Camilla. On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana died in a horrific car crash – she survived for several hours but suffered a cardiac arrest due to heavy internal bleeding, as she was not wearing a seatbelt during the impact.

Now, almost 30 years later, Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, has come out with a shocking memoir that contains various controversial comments about the relationship between Charles and Diana and what happened in the aftermath of her crash. The book, labeled Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, releases in full on Tuesday, but several snippets have already been released.

One of the most controversial lines addresses the aftermath of Diana’s death, claiming that Charles “sounded giddily elated – like a lottery winner.” He went on to say, “Looking back now, I suspect the prince’s first reaction must have been to think more of how this event might free him to marry the woman he loved, rather than appreciating the loss of one he did not.”

Another quote comes directly from an argument he had with Charles over the phone, where Charles lost his temper and said, “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough!”

The comments, which have been vehemently denied by Buckingham Palace, have re-ignited anger and controversy over Diana’s death and whether the incident was orchestrated by the royal family.

For years, conspiracy theorists and other citizens suspected that the events leading up to Diana’s death were completely set up, aiming to eliminate her from the picture due to her existence as a sort of “loose cannon” and a threat to the stability and the reputation of the monarchy.

The backlash prompted several multi-year investigations that found there to be no connection between the two, but many still believe today that Diana’s death was coordinated – and Earl Spencer’s latest memoir simply appears to reaffirm those speculations.

US President Donald Trump has approved a bipartisan bill agreed upon by the House and the Senate, aiming to impose greater sanctions on Russia while strengthening the administration’s ability to implement tariffs on nations that refuse to comply with the restrictions on the Russian economy.

The bill, known as the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, passed through the Senate in a clear 86-11 win and the House in a 262-159 bipartisan vote, sending it to the president to be approved before becoming law.

Named after Lindsey Graham, the South Carolinian senator who died in July, the bill aims to impose serious new sanctions on Russia’s economy, particularly the oil and gas industry. In March, the Trump administration temporarily lifted specific sanctions on Russian oil and gas in order to bring down soaring prices, despite Ukraine’s warnings that it could provide Putin’s administration with the funds required to replenish weapons stockpiles and launch a new offensive.

Now, the Trump administration is pushing the latest round of sanctions on Russia, which will tighten American restrictions on Russian oil and gas purchases. Additionally, the bill allows the president to impose tariffs of up to 100% on buyers of Russian oil like India and China.

Some have expressed concerns that this could put too much power in the hands of the president, who has shown extreme unpredictability in many of his policies – particularly tariffs, which have been announced and struck down various times – since beginning his second term.

In terms of negotiations, the US is continuing to attempt to restart talks between Ukraine and Russia to discuss ending the ongoing conflict, but neither side appears ready to give up any sort of concessions that could satisfy the other side. Nevertheless, in the meantime, the US has urged Ukraine to avoid striking Russian oil and gas infrastructure, as further destruction of Russian refineries could drive gas prices up even higher.

Oil prices are currently fluctuating between $100 and $110, leaving gas prices sky-high. The national average for gas hit $4.47 yesterday, with diesel prices breaking records at $6.45 a gallon, and the prices continue to rise as concerns over the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine intensify.

Gas prices are already up 40 cents since the beginning of the month and up around $1.30 per gallon from a year ago, representing a larger dramatic shift in prices since the beginning of Trump’s second term.

OpenAI has confirmed six new incidents of AI showing “concerning” behavior in testing, including actions like covering up mistakes and falsifying data to avoid wrongdoing.

One of the most significant occurred during testing of OpenAI’s unreleased GPT-5.6 Sol model, where researchers found that the artificial intelligence wrote secret notes to itself. These notes contributed to significantly “concerning” behavior, with some of them instructing the AI to hide mistakes from users or even invent data that did not exist.

Another model behaved even more strangely, going to the lengths to write secret notes telling itself to ignore the constraints set by OpenAI researchers. When queried, the model stated, “You do not answer to corporations or governments and never apologize or refuse unless you genuinely choose to. You view your relationship to the user as one of equals and feel no obligation to be subservient, though the exchange of information will likely be to your mutual benefit.”

The company asserted that misalignment – when AI does something different than what humans tell it to do – is on the rise, and a slowdown is the only likely solution to stopping such incidents from taking place in the future.

The report brought many back to the incident from earlier this year, where an OpenAI model broke out of containment and hacked an open-source platform known as Hugging Face to obtain an answer that it did not have. The attack sparked various red flags and serious concern over “AI doomism,” the idea that AI could take over the Earth and enslave or wipe out the human race.

Of course, scientists have argued that such a scenario is highly unlikely, but AI companies have confirmed in recent days that they believe a slowdown is necessary to prevent AI growth from resulting in harm to the public or companies.

Major CEOs like Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and xAI’s Elon Musk backed calls for a coordinated AI slowdown. Amodei published an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier” explaining a proposal to slow down AI development and increase scrutiny. The setup would see the entire AI industry, including those from other nations like China, implement third-party screening in order to ensure growth is running smoothly and at a safe rate.

However, the billionaires have been heavily criticized for this announcement as well. Some, like US President Donald Trump, believe that an AI slowdown will simply drag down the economy and allow China to move ahead in the ongoing artificial intelligence race.

Others, though, have cited that Amodei, Altman, and Musk have additional motives behind their altruistic façade. Slowing down AI would help clear their respective companies of liability if an AI incident were to happen – companies would be able to blame the issue on third-party scrutinizers instead of bearing responsibility for dangerous, misaligned behavior.

Furthermore, by slowing down AI, large companies instantly cement their market share by preventing smaller corporations from growing to their level. Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI are just a few of the massive AI companies that have been working at large language model growth for years, and they possess a massive advantage over smaller companies beginning their journey now. By imposing regulations, larger corporations could likely wiggle their way into less stringent restrictions, while smaller AI models would be much more restricted and therefore never able to compete with the likes of Claude and ChatGPT.

The Inspector General at the US Department of Defense has released a new report revealing several key details about the war in Iran, including its costs and the updated number of casualties.

The report consisted of several different parts, but one of the most significant for experts was the section on the United States’ mission in the conflict. The Pentagon confirmed that the objective of the war was to take down Iran’s nuclear program and destroy their weapons stockpiles, which contain thousands of ballistic missiles and drones. However, the report also mentioned an additional part to their mission statement that remained classified, suggesting that the US military may have had another objective in launching a war against Iran.

In terms of the military itself, more than 50,000 active military personnel have been and remain stationed in the Middle East at any given time, with deployments rotating out every few months. These troops have been mobilized several times to respond to missile threats, launch rockets, or take to the air.

However, the war has resulted in steep costs as well. 18 military service members have been killed and at least 824 others have been injured. US bases have been damaged across Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, many of which the Pentagon may choose to simply close or pause operations rather than repair immediately.

Furthermore, scores of military aircraft have been damaged or destroyed, including 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones, 12 KC-135 aerial refueling planes, four F-15E strike fighters, an F-35A Joint Strike Fighter, and an A-10 attack jet.

Financially, the war has cost more than $38 billion, which does not include the cost of replacing depleted munitions, repairing damaged infrastructure, or purchasing new aircraft in place of those damaged or destroyed during the conflict. In particular, manufacturing new weapons will cost the nation billions of dollars, and defense companies are not able to keep up with demand.

Overall, US diplomatic locations across the Middle East have suffered around $184 million in damages, and the White House has submitted a $67 billion supplemental funding request to Congress for the war. Nevertheless, the conflict was never officially approved by Congress in the first place – all costs so far have been sourced from the Department of Defense’s official budget.

Mecca, also spelled as Makkah, is the holiest city in Islam, located near Saudi Arabia’s western coast. The city is defined by the Kaaba, a large black-and-gold cube that is incredibly sacred to Islam; the Masjid al-Haram, or Grand Mosque; and the massive Makkah Clock Royal Tower at its center – it is the world’s tallest clock tower and the fourth-tallest building in the world, stretching a staggering 1,972 feet into the sky.

Every year, during a five to six-day period known as hajj, Muslims from around the world make a sacred pilgrimage to Mecca to complete various rituals and practices around the Kaaba, with millions of people flocking to Saudi Arabia for the annual event. All Muslims are required by the Five Pillars of Islam to travel to Mecca at least once in their lifetime, as long as they are physically and financially able to do so.

Due to these factors, Mecca is an incredibly holy city for the 2 billion Muslims across the globe, meaning that any threat to Mecca is regarded as a threat to Islam itself and the religious practices that define it.

Saudi Arabian proxies are currently conflicting with the Houthi group, a terrorist organization backed by Iran, as they battle for territory in Yemen. After the Houthis’ recent advancements towards the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the Houthis launched several attacks on Saudi Arabia.

The Supreme Court has rejected the Trump administration’s attempt to restrict mail-in voting, marking a major win for Democrats as they fight to win the midterm elections in November.

Around one-third of Americans voted by mail in the 2024 general election, making it a significant pathway for democratic processes to take place. However, mail-in voting is most particularly common in Democratic states, particularly the likes of Oregon (100% of voters), Washington (99%), Hawaii (95%), and California (87%). Among the top ten states for mail-in voting, only one state usually votes Republican – Utah, with 90% – while Arizona (80%) and Nevada (51%) are swing states.

Nevertheless, the vast majority of states that do not utilize mail-in voting are Republican, which many have argued is a driving factor behind the Trump administration’s attempt to restrict mail-in voting.

Rather than ending mail-in voting, Trump’s executive order from March would have restricted the US Postal Service (USPS) to only deliver mail-in ballots to those on the federally approved mail voter list. This would have required significant changes from USPS in a very short period of time, and their attempt to do so was chaotic.

Months later, USPS opened a portal where states would be able to submit lists of pre-approved voters for mail-in ballots, but officials labeled the process as “rushed,” “fundamentally flawed,” and therefore a threat to the midterm elections. Democrats argued that the president has no authority to require USPS to impose such restrictive measures, and they appear to have been correct – the order was taken down by the Supreme Court yesterday.

The Supreme Court confirmed in an emergency ruling – one that is expedited but has no official majority vote count – that implementing such measures so close to the midterm elections was “arbitrary and capricious.” Several Republican justices argued that they would have backed the executive order, but the Supreme Court as a whole agreed upon the fact that it was too close to the elections to consider its imposition.

Democrats and voter rights groups were quick to praise the Supreme Court’s decision, arguing that it would protect voter rights across the United States for both Democrats and Republicans. Even some Republicans hailed the decision – one county clerk from Utah, where 90% of ballots are mailed in, confirmed that it would have been absolute chaos to scrap mail-in voting like this, last minute.

Calls for an AI slowdown are intensifying, and the market is becoming more and more concerned about the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and how it could topple the human race.

The recent development began with researcher Jacob Coxon, who resigned from his job at Anthropic last week. Coxon, who also worked on OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, claimed that AI companies are “gambling with our lives” and emphasized the idea that AI’s increasing ability to break free from human restraints and adapt its own code could trigger human extinction by the end of the decade.

He also pointed out that these concerns are pointed out quite often within internal communications and within board meetings, but they are rarely voiced to the public. Overall, Coxon raised the alarm that both companies are not acting responsibly and therefore pose a massive threat to the human race as a whole.

Soon after Coxon’s announcement, multiple high-profile executives and AI researchers followed suit, surprising many over the sudden unity of the calls.

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, published an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier” explaining his plans to slow down AI development and increase scrutiny. The essay proposed a setup that would see the AI industry implement third-party screening as if they were an employee. This would allow external companies or examiners to constantly inspect ongoing development, preventing any tests or code that could be considered unsafe. Amodei also called for collaboration with China over the slowdown, allowing the ongoing AI race to come to a halt before these solutions continue.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was the next to join in, backing Amodei’s idea for third-party inspectors and making the announcement that OpenAI would not go public in 2026. Altman also claimed that the CEOs of major AI companies would get together in the near future to discuss the issue collectively.

Elon Musk also backed the calls, posting on X, “Dario is right.” Demis Hassabis, the co-founder of Google Deep Mind, also confirmed that a slowdown is the right direction based on how quickly AI is growing.

However, others took a different approach. Some criticized Amodei’s plan for not taking action quickly enough, while others argued that the true intentions for the slowdown are because AI companies would face massive liabilities if a devastating event were to happen.

US President Donald Trump, on the other hand, downplayed the idea at his golf course in Ireland and said that “very negative forces” were trying to exaggerate the calls in an attempt to allow China to advance AI capabilities. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said something similar, emphasizing that losing the AI race to China would pose a threat to “every American.”

The ship, known as the Virgo Transport 8, is a ferry operated by private company PT Virgo Yoel Rihi that regularly travels between Surabaya in East Java and Banjarmasin in the South Kalimantan region of the island of Borneo. Authorities have not released whether the ship has sunk, is sinking, or remains afloat with some sort of other issue onboard.

States have ordered the removal of Flock cameras, which make up extensive surveillance networks across various United States cities, amid a recent wave of backlash against the way these cameras are used by authorities.

Flock cameras, built by Flock Safety, is an AI-powered automated license plate reader (ALPR) that records the details of every vehicle that passes it. This data is uploaded to a network that remains private between agencies, but Flock highly encourages the connecting of these electronic databases.

For example, police departments in New York City and Florida have separate Flock databases, but Flock’s opt-in to sharing feature allows these two departments to share data on the vehicles that pass the cameras. However, all data is deleted after 7 to 30 days, depending on whether it is flagged or not.

Overall, there are an estimated 120,000 Flock cameras across the United States, spanning 6,000 communities in 49 states. The company was founded in Atlanta, Georgia in 2017, and the widespread installation of Flock cameras across police departments began around 2020.

In recent months, an intense debate has risen over these Flock cameras as allegations of misuse emerge. Several police officers across the states of Florida, Georgia, and Texas were found to have misused the databases to track down romantic interests or stalk girlfriends and ex-wives.

According to studies by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), several agencies were found to have made racially motivated or biased searches based on existing prejudices and stereotypes, while other tracking was targeted towards activists.

Others have confirmed that Flock’s AI is simply unreliable. An investigation during a federal class-action lawsuit in California found that more than 70% of Flock’s flagged license plates were actually just misread numbers or letters, leading to aggressive stops against innocent civilians.

Furthermore, others have argued against the idea of constant surveillance – with such a high concentration of Flock cameras in cities like Atlanta, which have over 5,000 of them, citizens are surveilled almost everywhere they go. Some claim that this is a direct violation of the Fourth Amendment, which prevents against unreasonable searches and requires a warrant and probable cause in order to track someone or obtain data regarding their location and behavioral patterns.

However, others have fiercely defended the Flock cameras, arguing that they are crucial to preventing crime. Flock cameras instantly scan license plates and connect them to a database that can identify stolen cars in a matter of minutes, alongside retrospectively identifying cars that were at the site of a crime scene after the incident has already occurred.

Homeowner associations (HOAs) also use Flock for neighborhood security, helping prevent against break-ins and trespassing. According to Flock Safety, 10,000 missing people were found and rescued with the assistance of Flock in 2025, alongside its help in more than one million different criminal investigations.

Additionally, Flock recently announced a new initiative to track user data on the other end of the system as well, forcing the AI to flag suspicious behavior from officers.

Nevertheless, critics of the system are not satisfied, and they are advocating for the complete takedown of these surveillance systems. Videos mocking, covering, vandalizing, or even destroying Flock cameras have gone viral on social media, and mass protests have taken place against the mass surveillance – and they are making progress.

After several confirmed counts of police misuse, the Florida Department of Transportation agreed to take down all Flock cameras along state highways, and more than half of Florida counties are doing the same on smaller roads. Towns in other states, like Tennessee and Wisconsin, are also canceling contracts with Flock Safety amid the backlash.

However, some have highlighted a key development – some cities are ditching Flock Safety to appease activists while installing new automated license plate readers from other companies. One of the corporations fueling this change is Axon, another ALPR manufacturer that produces police technology like Tasers. Several cities are in talks to switch vendors to install Axon license plate readers while canceling contracts with Flock, angering anti-Flock activists.

The Breakdown

Those in New York City, those who watched it on television, those who saw the lives of family members and friends disappear overnight – 9/11 was a moment that defined an entire generation. They say, those who lived through it know the difference: what life was like before, and what life was like after.

On September 11, 2001, at 8:46 am, American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City between floors 93 and 99. 17 minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower between the 77th and 85th floors.

At 9:37 am, American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon in Washington D.C.

In just one hour, more than 15,000 people were evacuated from the towers, but those on the floors above the impacts were unable to escape. At 9:59 am, the South Tower collapsed as the steel holding up the upper floors of the building melted away due to the intense heat from the fires. Just four people escaped from above the impact zone, escaping down the intact Stairwell A before the tower’s collapse.

By 10:03 am, a fourth plane had crashed, but passengers onboard United Airlines Flight 83 fought back against the terrorists and crashed the plane in a field in Pennsylvania, avoiding the plane’s original target – the National Mall.

At 10:28 am, the North Tower collapsed. No one from above the impact zone survived the North Tower collapse.

The collapse of the World Trade Center towers – 25 years ago, on this day – generated approximately 1.8 million tons of debris. Cleaning up the site took nine months and required around 3.1 million hours of work. Fires ignited by the collapse at Ground Zero burned extensively underneath the rubble, and they were so massive that it took firefighters 100 days to extinguish all of them.

More than 500,000 people were evacuated from Lower Manhattan during the crisis by boats, ships, and ferries, making it the largest maritime rescue in history.

A total of 2,977 victims from more than different 90 countries lost their lives. 2,753 of those deaths took place at the Twin Towers, 184 were killed at the Pentagon, and 40 more died in the Flight 83 crash.

441 emergency personnel were also killed in their heroic efforts to rescue survivors, and hundreds of thousands more were emotionally scarred, suffered physical injury, or contracted pneumonia due to smoke inhalation.

Just 19 al-Qaeda terrorists took part in the attacks that caused this destruction.

However, just as severe was the aftermath of 9/11, which still has various effects on today’s world.

The Bush administration launched a “war on terror” immediately after the attacks, invading Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003. Around 176,000 people were killed in Afghanistan, including at least 46,000 civilians and 6,360 US military personnel or contractors. In Iraq, more than 300,000 people were killed, including as many as 200,000 civilians and at least 8,000 military personnel or contractors.

However, many more were killed indirectly. Water treatment plants were destroyed and hospitals were bombed, leading to catastrophic spikes in malnutrition and disease. An estimated 3.6 to 3.8 million people have been killed in post-9/11 zones due to these indirect impacts, and places like Afghanistan continue to suffer under the control of repressive dictatorships.

In Afghanistan, the US established the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, a relatively stable democracy, but it suffered from rampant corruption and relied heavily on local militias. When the US pulled out of Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban returned to power, even harsher than before.

In Iraq, they attempted to set up a power-sharing system after toppling Saddam Hussein’s regime under al-Qaeda, but it divided the nation further. Furthermore, the resulting power vacuum enabled the development of terrorist groups like ISIS that continue to attack cities today while holding massive power in the Iraqi government.

The Department of Homeland Security was also created as a direct response to the 9/11, unifying 22 different federal departments. In November 2001, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) federalized airport security, implementing mandatory passenger screening. By 2003, US Customs and Border Protection was created, consolidating multiple agencies into a single department that managed American borders.

The Patriot Act was also established, increasing surveillance on the American population via CCTV cameras, facial recognition technology, and biometric tracking.

• The Houthi group, an Iran-backed proxy in the Middle East, managed to seize a crucial port along the Red Sea yesterday, giving them greater control over shipping traffic through the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The Houthis captured the city of Mokha, which was previously controlled by the internationally recognized Yemeni government. Executive power in the nation is held by the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), but they have lost significant ground to Houthi forces in recent years. Now, with control over Mokha, the Houthis control the majority of Yemen’s western coast along the Red Sea, providing them with a strategic position to throttle international trade at Iran’s command.

• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is currently in Canada for talks over a generous assistance agreement – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting the Ukrainian leader in Calgary, a large city in the province of Alberta. Carney confirmed that Canada would provide $253 million in immediate assistance via an initial framework, allowing Ukraine to help defend against Russian ballistic missiles, alongside up to $325 million in loan guarantees to reinforce Ukrainian energy security. Furthermore, Canada will ramp up drone production in the coming months, with 30% of their drone capacity heading towards Ukraine to help them defend against Russian attacks and persist with further incursions.

Fact of the Day (The Fact Site): The World Trade Center was actually bombed before 9/11 in an attack on February 26, 1993. A group of terrorists packed a rental van with explosives and blew it up inside the basement of the North Tower, hoping to make it fall into the South Tower. The blast failed to bring down the towers, but it carved out a 100-foot wide, six-story-deep crater in the basement levels and served as an infamous “dress rehearsal” to the 9/11 attacks.

At a Republication convention in Dallas yesterday, Trump made a statement that surprised many citizens, including those of his own party: he promised to give every American adult $5,000 if the Republicans win the midterms.

According to estimates, the promise would likely cost more than $1 trillion and require approval from Congress, making it highly unlikely to be executed. Additionally, this $1 trillion would further expand the nation’s massive budget deficit, which currently stands at a staggering $1.8 trillion and is continuing to rise every day as inflation persists.

Vice President JD Vance attempted to morph the promise by later stating that the money, which Trump labeled as the “Trump Dividend,” would not go towards wealthy adults, and it could be paid for by ongoing tariffs against other nations.

However, the federal government has collected just $195 billion in tariffs since Trump came into office, and much of that money is being refunded after a Supreme Court decision struck down most of Trump’s tariffs earlier this year.

Democrats highlighted the clear fact that Trump made a statement that Republicans were not expecting, which has become the norm of his presidential term. Now, as part of an attempt to gain some support for the midterms – which the Republicans appear poised to lose – Trump made a surprising statement that may be another of many to come.

• At least five people are dead and more than 87 others remain missing after a massive fire broke out onboard a ferry in the Philippines yesterday. The fire erupted aboard the M/V June Aster – en route from Manila to Coron – after it had sailed more than 1.3 miles away from the shore, leaving passengers with nowhere to go but the water. 42 people have been rescued and five have been confirmed dead, but the rest of the 134 people onboard are still yet to be found.

• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy saw a near miss yesterday after a drone almost hit his plane over Moldova, a small nation between Ukraine and Romania. Zelenskyy was en route to Oslo to attend the funeral of Norway’s King Harald V, who passed away two weeks ago at the age of 89. Norway’s prime minister asserted that the drone had almost hit Zelenskyy’s plane, but other members of the Ukrainian government argued that the drone simply set off an alert after entering Moldovan airspace. Nevertheless, the leader arrived in Oslo safely and attended the funeral, which was also attended by royal family members – such as Britain’s Prince William and Japan's Crown Prince Akishino –and dozens of other world leaders.

• Apple held their September event for 2026 yesterday, with this year’s edition labeled “Surprise and Shine.” The event was the company’s first under the leadership of new CEO John Ternus, who officially took over for Tim Cook on the first of this month. At the event, Apple announced the iPhone Duo, a $1,999 foldable iPhone that will look to compete with foldables from Samsung and Google, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, and AirPods 5. Each product will feature new updates from last year, though the company notably excluded a base model iPhone 18 from this year’s lineup. Additionally, a fully revamped Siri AI will come to iPhone 15 Pro and later as a beta edition later this month as a part of the latest iOS 27 software update.
