Here&#8217;s everything you need to know.</p><div><hr></div><h4>The Breakdown</h4><p>The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of protecting unconditional birthright citizenship. </p><p>On January 20 of last year, Trump signed an <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/protecting-the-meaning-and-value-of-american-citizenship/">executive order</a> eliminating birthright citizenship for the children of parents who were not US citizens. Lower courts quickly <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-loss-trump-congress-birthright-citizenship-rcna352418">halted</a> the order, arguing that it needed approval from higher courts before implementation. </p><p>Currently, in the 14th Amendment, the United States Constitution states:</p><blockquote><p><em>"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and <strong>subject to the jurisdiction thereof</strong>, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."</em></p></blockquote><p>The Trump administration based their argument on the word &#8220;jurisdiction&#8221; in the amendment, claiming that this required some sort of permanent status in the United States. </p><p>This meant that, under the <a href="https://www.scotusblog.com/2026/06/supreme-court-strikes-down-trumps-order-ending-birthright-citizenship/">executive order</a>, the children of current US citizens would still receive birthright citizenship &#8211; instead, children of illegal immigrants, visa holders, or green card holders would not receive immediate citizenship, dramatically changing the landscape for citizenship in the United States. </p><p>The order drew heaps of <a href="https://www.npr.org/2026/03/30/nx-s1-5760983/birthright-citizenship-public-opinion-supreme-court-arguments">praise</a> from Republicans and far-right supporters in the US, who have long criticized the country&#8217;s laws on birthright citizenship; the policy is largely popular in the Western Hemisphere, but most countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia do not grant unconditional citizenship upon birth. </p><p>They also argued that children of US citizens would still receive citizenship, protecting the rights of many Americans while minimizing illegal immigration. Republicans also confirmed that the rule would only apply to new births, and children or existing residents that have already been granted citizenship would not be stripped of their rights. </p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.yournewshub.org/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Daily updates from Your News Hub &#8211; one curated article from the day&#8217;s news, straight to your inbox.</p></div><form class="subscription-widget-subscribe"><input type="email" class="email-input" name="email" placeholder="Type your email&#8230;" tabindex="-1"><input type="submit" class="button primary" value="Subscribe"><div class="fake-input-wrapper"><div class="fake-input"></div><div class="fake-button"></div></div></form></div></div><p>However, the move sparked massive backlash among Democrats and leftists, who claimed that adding conditions to birthright citizenship would endanger the country&#8217;s democracy and directly violate the Constitution. </p><p>They also <a href="https://democrats-judiciary.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/committee-democrats-provide-republicans-with-much-needed-civics-lesson-presidents-can-t-end-birthright-citizenship-via-executive-order">argued</a> that the change was a severe overextension of presidential power &#8211;&nbsp;under US law, any formal changes to amendments go through a extensive process that includes approval from Congress. </p><p>Finally, the decision arrived in the Supreme Court, who confirmed their decision yesterday. </p><p>The court, which voted 6-3 against the executive order, based their judgments off of multiple primary points. First, they confirmed that the move did, in fact, directly violate the 14th Amendment, immediately deeming it unconstitutional. Furthermore, the amendment completely focuses on the location of the birth, excluding any language that limits the jurisdiction to those with permanent legal status. </p><p>Democrats hailed the win, which is a massive blow to the Trump administration&#8217;s agenda &#8211; from the beginning of his term, Trump had championed his changes to birthright citizenship as a core part of his plan to &#8220;Make America Great Again.&#8221; </p><p>Nevertheless, Trump remained persistent. He confirmed that Republicans plan to introduce it as a bill into Congress, allowing them to formally change the 14th Amendment. </p><p>However, the party needs a two-thirds majority in both houses to pass, which is incredibly unlikely given the current, approximately 53-47 split between Republicans and Democrats &#8211; respectively &#8211; across the House of Representatives and the Senate. Additionally, some Republican representatives and senators do not support Trump&#8217;s agenda, making a success in Congress even more improbable.  </p><div><hr></div><h4>The Global Snapshot</h4><ul><li><p>Temperatures are approaching 100&#176;F (38&#176;C) across the eastern United States as an <a href="https://yournewshub.substack.com/p/dangerous-heatwave-moving-into-eastern">extreme heat wave</a> moves in. Various cities, including Dallas, Charlotte, and Washington D.C. will exceed that temperature threshold, but high humidity levels will make it feel much, much hotter throughout the region. Authorities have advised locals to stay indoors, drink water, limit outdoor exercise, and avoid dehydrating beverages like alcohol.</p><p></p></li><li><p>Recent reports have confirmed that US President Donald Trump has gained at least $2.2 billion in net worth since returning to the White House for his second term. At least $1.4 billion alone are from the president&#8217;s cryptocurrency company, World Liberty Financial, alongside sales of the $TRUMP memecoin. The release has triggered severe backlash among the American public, who are facing rising costs and rapidly decreasing affordability across the nation as the gap between the bottom 50% and the upper 1% continues to widen. </p><p></p></li><li><p>At least three people were injured after an explosion in Monaco, including a Ukrainian business tycoon. A manhunt is currently underway as officials search for the suspect in the bombing. </p><p></p></li><li><p>At least 14 children were killed in Pakistan after the roof of a tutoring center in the city of Lahore collapsed. Here&#8217;s everything you need to know.</p><div><hr></div><h4>The Breakdown</h4><p>In 1986, General Electric bought RCA Corporation, which owned NBC &#8211; a prominent American news network &#8211; at the time. By 2004, GE secured a merger with Vivendi Universal, merging the company with NBC to form NBCUniversal. </p><p>Then, in 2011, Comcast &#8211; an cable TV and internet provider &#8211; bought a stake in NBCUniversal, going on to complete their purchase of the entire company in 2013. The two companies then become Comcast NBCUniversal, which remains the world&#8217;s largest media and entertainment conglomerate by revenue. </p><p>Now, after 13 years, Comcast NBCUniversal is <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/comcast-spinoff-nbcuniversal-sky-split-two-companies-rcna352188">splitting</a> up, according to a recent announcement from the company. NBCUniversal will become an independent corporation consisting of networks and studios, including Universal Studios and its respective theme parks; NBC; NBC News, which remains one of the top three news networks in the US; Telemundo, a Spanish broadcast network; Bravo, a cable channel; Peacock, a streaming service; and Sky, a British broadcasting company. </p><p>Meanwhile, Comcast will continue providing internet and broadband services to their respective customers. </p><p>The move comes at a <a href="https://www.netsuite.com/portal/resource/articles/erp/media-industry-challenges.shtml">tough time</a> for the media industry, which has been forced to consolidate operations over the last few years. </p><p>Streaming services have quickly edged out cable companies and studios, with new applications like Hulu, Fubo, and YouTube TV taking over the market and eliminating the need to go to theaters for new movies. </p><p>Advertising revenue has been largely stolen by Big Tech &#8211; ads on Google and Microsoft are much more wide-reaching than advertisements on news channels. </p><p>At the same time, news corporations are still widely watched among adults and seniors, but young adults and teenagers are becoming increasingly consumed by social media and other types of short-form content that serve as an alternative to news for more recent generations. </p><p>Artificial intelligence is also playing a role &#8211; many younger users simply search for news on ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude instead of searching for true journalism or clicking through to real, human-written articles. </p><p>These changing times and habits are forcing news corporations and studios to streamline their operations. </p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.yournewshub.org/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">No jargon, no endless scrolling. Both cable companies were declining assets for the conglomerate, but placing them under a separate company allowed Comcast NBCUniversal to improve their balance sheets while providing both channels with more flexibility and new leadership. </p><p>Just weeks ago, the Justice Department approved a <a href="https://yournewshub.substack.com/p/us-justice-department-approves-111">$111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery</a> by Paramount Skydance after WBD announced plans to split into two individual companies as part of a wider effort to streamline operations.</p><p>With this split, Comcast NBCUniversal is doing the same, and experts and investors alike believe that this is the right move. While cable and entertainment used to belong together in the public eye, both companies now have very different focuses. Separating them allows each to improve internal flexibility while reducing dependence on the other, proving to be beneficial for either company. Comcast NBCUniversal stock (CMCSA) jumped more than 7% in trading in the hours after the announcement, proving that investors are in favor of the split.  </p><p>Comcast will continue to hold a 20% stake in NBCUniversal following the spinoff, which is expected to be completed by next year. Current investors will maintain a stake in both companies, and new leadership will be elected for NBCUniversal, which will transition to becoming a fully independent entity for the first time in the history of the company. </p><p>Officials have confirmed that both companies will not be up for sale &#8211; rather, they will continue as their own standalone corporations. However, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/29/business/comcast-nbcuniversal-spinoff.html">media</a> is rife with speculation that Comcast could be considering a merger with another internet provider, such as Charter. </p><div><hr></div><h4>The Global Snapshot</h4><ul><li><p>The US and Iran have resumed talks in Qatar after <a href="https://yournewshub.substack.com/p/us-and-iran-trade-strikes-once-again">renewed tensions and multiple airstrikes</a> this past week, bringing back hope that the conflict could begin winding down by the end of the year. The heat dome has since moved east, bringing searing temperatures to central Europe, but the western portion of the continent is just beginning to recover from the devastating heat. </p></li><li><p>Also headlining French news was a crash in the northeastern corner of the country &#8211; a skydiving plane crashed near the town of Nancy, killing all 10 parachutists and the pilot onboard. Investigations into the cause of the crash are currently underway. </p></li><li><p>Meanwhile, another devastating crash occurred in Saudi Arabia yesterday. This is known as parallel processing, and it is crucial to the development of AI, which needs those cores to make thousands of complex calculations and decisions at the same time. </p></li><li><p><strong>Data centers</strong> house tens of thousands of GPUs and are the home base for AI operations and cloud computing services. </p></li><li><p><strong>Cloud computing</strong> is the on-demand delivery of various online services, including servers, storage, databases, and software, across the internet. Larger data centers use up to 100 MW at any given time, while hyperscale data centers, like those utilized by tech giants, can maintain a demand of as high as to 1,000 MW, equivalent to 1 gigawatt. </p><p>By comparison, a nuclear reactor consistently produces around the same amount of energy &#8211;&nbsp;but there&#8217;s a crucial difference. <strong>The United States has 94 nuclear reactors, as opposed to the nation&#8217;s 750 hyperscale data centers.</strong> </p><p>Within these data centers, <strong>99.9% of the electricity consumed by a GPU is converted into thermal energy</strong>. This means that a single graphics card operating at peak wattage can generate up to 450 watts of heat under load, while an entire, AI-capable server rack can emit as much as 100,000 watts of thermal energy continuously. Multiply those numbers by thousands of GPUs, and you end up with staggering statistics. </p><p>GPUs themselves <a href="https://massedcompute.com/faq-answers/?question=How%20does%20GPU%20temperature%20impact%20AI%20model%20training%20performance?">operate</a> at a temperature between 150&#176;F (65&#176;C) and 185&#176;F (85&#176;C), but ensuring that they do not exceed that threshold is crucial. <strong>Without proper cooling management, GPUs begin thermal throttling</strong>, where they systematically slow down or halt operations to prevent overheating. Currently, data centers utilize water for this purpose, but their needs are constant and immense. <strong>A large data center uses 1-5 million gallons of water a day</strong>, <a href="https://www.eesi.org/articles/view/data-centers-and-water-consumption">equivalent</a> to the daily water usage of a town with 10,000 to 50,000 people. </p><p>This water is cooled using large industrial chillers and then circulated through massive, noisy cooling towers, but the chips&#8217; intense heat emissions cause the liquid to evaporate immediately. This prevents data centers from utilizing a closed-loop system &#8211; instead, <strong>the water they consume is immediately emitted into the atmosphere, depleting local water supplies</strong>. As much of the United States continues to face extreme drought conditions, data centers suck up water that is crucial to communities facing these situations. </p><p>However, <strong>Nvidia may have just changed the game.</strong></p><div><hr></div><h4>The Solution</h4><p>Nvidia recently <a href="https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-unveils-rubin-cpx-a-new-class-of-gpu-designed-for-massive-context-inference">announced</a> the arrival of their <strong>latest round of next-generation chips</strong> &#8211;&nbsp;the <strong>Vera Rubin</strong> platform. Furthermore, alongside the financial savings for eliminating water-based cooling, <strong>data centers will be able to <a href="https://www.techtimes.com/articles/319107/20260625/ai-data-center-water-use-not-solved-nvidias-cooling-fix-stops-walls.htm">save</a> millions of dollars in electricity costs</strong> &#8211; rather than paying for expensive mechanical chillers and noisy evaporation towers, investing in dry coolers drastically reduces infrastructure needs. </p><div><hr></div><h4>The Caveats</h4><p>Of course, there are always drawbacks. </p><p>The first and most significant of these shortcomings is the fact that <strong>the new strategy only applies to the water consumption of data centers themselves</strong>. </p><p>Fossil fuel power plants, which include coal and natural gas-based facilities, use more than <strong>2.7 billion gallons of water</strong> per day, according to the US Geological Survey, and they supply more than half of all electricity used in data centers. </p><p>In order for AI companies to truly minimize their overall water usage, <strong>they must also invest in energy sources that use less water</strong> &#8211; and this doesn&#8217;t just mean renewable energy. Even nuclear power plants maintain extremely high water usage demands. <strong>Other sources, like hydropower and solar power, consume almost no water</strong>, making them an ideal choice for an industry looking to minimize its overall water consumption.</p><p>The production of the semiconductor chips used in data centers is also incredibly water-intensive, using <strong>thousands of gallons of water in the manufacturing process of a single chip</strong>. AI companies must invest in more efficient strategies to produce these semiconductors to further reduce their environmental impact. </p><p>Another major drawback is that <strong>the</strong> <strong>DSX only applies to new data centers that are yet to be constructed</strong>. For this reason, coastal areas experience less temperature fluctuation overall and suffer from some of the least impacts during heatwaves. </p><p>Meanwhile, the inner regions of western Europe are currently baking in the heat. Madrid, Spain hit 100&#176;F (38&#176;C) this week, while Paris, France has hovered around 103&#176;F (39&#176;C). Some parts of western France could reach temperatures as high as 111&#176;F (44&#176;F) this week, breaking all-time records for the month of June. </p><p>Frankfurt, Germany is projected to reach 103&#176;F (39&#176;C) by Friday, while Rome, Italy and Zurich, Switzerland will see temperatures as high as 97&#176;F (36&#176;C). Built in 1922, the reflecting pool has undergone extensive renovations over the years, but none as controversial as this year&#8217;s. </p><p>Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump announced that the pool would undergo renovations this year in an attempt to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/11/us/politics/reflecting-pool-paint-contract-trump.html">target</a> leaking joints, repaint the floor, and permanently remove persistent algal blooms. He confirmed that the costs would not exceed $1.8 million &#8211; but that quickly changed. </p><p>In April, Trump gave the contract to Atlantic Industrial Coatings, a Virginia-based company, in a no-bid deal. Usually, government contracts go through an extensive bidding process to identify a contractor that can do the work for the least amount of money, but no-bid contracts can be awarded in specific cases. </p><p>In the case of the reflecting pool, the Trump administration claimed that the no-bid deal was justified due to the urgency of the task, as it needed to be completed before the nation&#8217;s 250th anniversary on July 4. Meanwhile, Trump stated that he chose the company because they worked on the swimming pools at his golf club in Virginia. </p><p>However, the lack of a bidding process quickly raised concerns over corruption&nbsp;&#8211; Trump has been widely accused of several schemes that utilize taxpayer money for his own purposes, though he has vehemently denied all claims. </p><p>Those concerns later intensified once the costs of the project ballooned &#8211; the Interior Department added millions to the contract in May to account for the urgency of the project, and further payments in June <a href="https://abcnews.com/US/reflecting-pool-renovations-cost-16-million/story?id=134024265">brought</a> the total cost of the project to around $14.7 million. China also controls more than 70% of the world&#8217;s rare earths mining capacity and over 90% of global refining and processing capacity. </p><p>Other minerals used in technology are grouped together with rare earths, creating a new category known as &#8220;critical minerals&#8221; that includes lithium, magnesium, gallium, and cobalt. China also controls upwards of 70-90% of the world&#8217;s processing capacity of these minerals. </p><p>These processing capabilities give China an incredible amount of power over global economies. Through 2026 so far, over 195 new projects involving critical minerals have announced, totaling more than $74 billion in investments.</p><p>In an attempt to reduce China&#8217;s critical minerals dominance, G7 countries <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/g7-sets-up-critical-minerals-alliance-crisis-platform-2026-06-17/">plan</a> to begin coordinated stockpiling and recycling efforts in case of sudden sanctions or tariffs, in addition to the diversification of the list of nations which they receive these minerals from. Their ultimate goal is to bring their dependence on China for critical minerals down to 50%, with the group aiming to reach at least 60% by 2030. </p><p>It is a highly ambitious goal, though, and it will be extremely challenging to execute such a plan without raising costs for everyday consumers. China controls at least one part of the supply chain of almost every mineral, whether it is resource extraction, refining, processing, or the actual construction of the part. The White House &#8211; the historic home of the incumbent US President and their family &#8211; has long been an iconic symbol of the nation, and many citizens felt that hosting seven matches involving brutal fights under such a structure was equivalent to desecrating the South Lawn. TKO will reap the benefits of all sponsorship packages involving the event, which cost major companies like crypto.com, Polymarket, and Bud Light more than $1 million apiece. </p><p>Nevertheless, the company spent more than $60 million on the construction of &#8220;The Claw&#8221; and will pay another $1 million for the restoration of the grass on the South Lawn, making it a costly few matches for TKO. Meanwhile, in the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons held the lead with a record of 60-22, followed by the Boston Celtics (56-26) and the New York Knicks (53-29). </p><p>Ahead of the conference finals, the Pistons &#8211; the Eastern Conference-frontrunners &#8211; were knocked out by the Cleveland Cavaliers, paving the way for the Knicks to face off against and eventually defeat Cleveland in the semifinals. Meanwhile, the Spurs defeated the Thunder to earn their first place in the finals since they won the title in 2014. </p><p>Despite beginning with two away matches, the Knicks defeated the Spurs in both of the first two games, 105-95 and 105-104. However, the Spurs managed to extend their lead, scoring 30 third-quarter points &#8211; led by rookie Dylan Harper, with 10 points. </p><p>As a whole, it was a massive game for both players. Brunson scored a staggering 45 points throughout the game &#8211; almost half of his team&#8217;s entire total &#8211; making 13 out of 15 free throws and 4 out of 7 three-pointers. He also had three rebounds and three assists, and was later awarded the title of finals MVP. Meanwhile, Harper, despite being under massive pressure, was his team&#8217;s leading scorer, with 25 points. He also had five crucial rebounds and four assists across 31 minutes of playtime &#8211; the highest of any bench player from either team. </p><p>In the end, the game came down to the wire, with the Knicks tightening up the score towards the end of the fourth quarter. Brunson went on a tear in the last few minutes, scoring 13 consecutive points to completely erase the team&#8217;s 16-point deficit. With less than 20 seconds left, Spurs guard Stephon Castle completed a dunk to bring the score to 92-90, with the Knicks in the lead. </p><p>The Spurs were forced to foul to maintain a chance at the win, but the Knicks made both free throws to bring the score to 94-90. This would have allowed both companies to be more highly valued and increase their individual financial stability and flexibility.</p><p>However, the split <a href="https://www.yournewshub.org/post/warner-bros-discovery-considers-sale-piques-interest-of-paramount-skydance">piqued the interest</a> of both Paramount Skydance, a recently formed media conglomerate led by David Ellison, and Netflix, the world&#8217;s largest streaming service. Following weeks of negotiations, the Warner Bros. board agreed to sell the streaming and studios side of the company to Netflix for a staggering $82.7 billion, while the global networks side would be spun off into an independent company. </p><p>The deal immediately sparked <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/06/business/media/hollywood-reaction-netflix-warner-bros.html">outrage</a> among actors and filmmakers, who claimed that Netflix&#8217;s takeover of all Warner-affiliated studios would impose a massive monopoly onto the entertainment market. </p><p>On top of this, Ellison refused to back down.
